MAC III for Can I Gymru

Elstree Light & Power were contracted to set up the lighting for three television programmes which were recorded over a period of 10 days from venue Cymru in Llandudno, Wales. These programmes were Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol (a communal hymn singing program), Can I Gymru (Song For Wales) and a Rhydian concert. Can I Gymru was televised on the evening of the 1st March to coincide with St David's Day.
The lighting fixtures chosen for all the shows were MAC 700's and MAC TW1. The Martin lights used for Can I Gymru in particular were MAC 700 Profiles, MAC TW1, the new MAC III and LC Panels.
The LC panels were an important part of the whole set and ELP working closely with set designer Phil Williams, designed a rigging system that enabled them to create to 4m x 2m sliding doors from LC panels with a rear wall of six screens in a 4 x 3 configuration.
Darren Fletcher, project manager at ELP Manchester, discussed the use of the LC Panels: "Three 4 x 2 screens were flown above the stage at an angle to create a 'ceiling piece' over the heads of the performers. I was impressed with how quick all three set elements were rigged with simple connections. There was no lengthy set-up time to calibrate the screens, and, always important, saving the production company money by using the same crew for lighting and video."
"As ever, the MAC 700's provided excellent light output and more than enough different looks for the three programmes - from subtleness for the hymn singing to the more rock 'n' roll for Can I Gymru and Rhydian. The MAC TW1's provided some great warm colours and the mix of the warm tungsten colour wash with the cooler discharge source of the MAC 700's worked really well. The MAC TW1's were also very handy key lights for the last minute position changes of backing artists."
Darren commented on how the new MAC IIIs performed for him: "The MAC IIIs worked really well, and using just four on the floor we could create a whole new mood instantly, with the super bright output and beam angle we could fill the whole stage with a completely new look before we even started with the top rig."
Lighting director John Penny Williams said: "The combination of panels and moving lights worked extremely well with the set. The panels gave us an endless variety of looks, and the super bright MAC III's gave the depth. I‘ve usually found lights of this size to be lacking on the control side; this is certainly not the case with these. The colours and gobos were great, pan and tilt was very smooth and the beam angle was very good. I'll look forward to using them again."
Darren thankdc moving light and Catalyst operator Russel Grubiak and generic lights operator Sinbad for all their efforts in making the shows successful.
