Paul Weller Packs the Arenas, Backed by Canegreen and Meyer Sound MILO
The 2009 Brit award winner Paul Weller stands firm as one of Britain's top male artists of all time, with a three-decade music career; musical forays that have melded rock, pop, acid jazz, and blue-eyed soul; and a fan base that spans several generations. London-based Canegreen once again provided a Meyer Sound MILO line array loudspeaker system for Weller on his recent tour, culminated by his first-ever appearance at London's O2 Arena on March 21, 2009.
Canegreen's relationship with Weller dates back to early in his solo career. Designed by consultant Mike Savage and Canegreen, Weller's touring system included two hangs of 12 MILO and two MILO 120 line array loudspeakers each, augmented by two arrays of 12 MICA line array loudspeakers for bleacher coverage and eight MSL-4 loudspeakers for frontfill. Low end was provided by 12 700-HP subwoofers, stacked in cardioid pairs to prevent low-frequency buildup on stage.
Weller's FOH engineer Andrew "Ange" Jones is a long-time Meyer Sound user. "I started using Meyer gear back in the mid-1980s," says Jones. "We had four MSL-3s on tour with Ultravox, and at the time it felt pretty powerful." Jones adds the MILO rig has performed well on a tour that has consisted largely of sheds and arenas. "There were a few halls where, I'll be honest, I was a bit concerned we didn't have enough PA with us. But the MILO has surprised us - it really sounds great, and it goes up quickly."
On stage, Monitor Engineer Annette Guilfoyle mixed to a substantial sidefill system of 12 MICA boxes. "Paul's an old-school rocker, and he much prefers stage monitors to in-ears," says Guilfoyle. "It's a bit of a mixed blessing, of course, because it sounds great and the band's happy, but it does make for a pretty loud stage."
For the show at the 18,000-seat O2 Arena, a total of 60 MILO and MILO 120 loudspeakers were deployed, along with 36 MICA loudspeakers and four 600-HP subwoofers. Eight M'elodieTM line array loudspeakers and 18 700-HP subwoofers handled frontfill duties.
Yan Stile, Canegreen's director, compares the sound quality at the O2 show to listening to recordings with his home system. "I sat in the furthest and highest seat," says Stile. "And it was like listening to my home hi-fi, which comprises two Meyer Sound HD-1 (studio monitors), so my expectations are naturally very high."
