The Beuth Hochschule für Technik, as Berlin's highly respected university of applied sciences is now known, offers an extensive range of courses - from architecture to mechanical engineering and even theatre technology.

As well as a new name, the university in the heart of Berlin will greet students returning for the summer semester with a new permanent exhibition, comprising three gigantic live photos taken by the celebrated photographer Ralph Larmann.

Present at the official opening of the exhibition at 11.30 on the 29th May in the University's ‘Theaterlabor' (Haus Beuth, 4th Floor, Lütticherstrasse 38) will be the artist himself to comment on the three six-by-four-metre images. These show a concert given by George Michael in Athens, the massive crowd attending Live-8 in the summer of 2005 seen from Berlin's Siegessäule monument, and a somewhat more intimate view of the auditorium of the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin.

Three motifs, three moods, and three images that "combine art and technology to wonderful effect', in the view of Tina Kitzing of the Beuth Hochschule für Technik - one of the reasons, the professor explained, why the works had been chosen. The imposing Larmann images form the cornerstone of a project Professor Kitzing conducted with her students, the object of which was to redesign the university foyer. "We received many exciting suggestions," remembers Kitzing, "but that which impressed us most of all was one assigning a large-format photo to each of the three staircases." The staircases in question lead to lecture halls used by students following the "Theatre Technology", "Events Technology and Management (Bachelors)" and "Events Technology and Management (Masters)" syllabuses, to all of which the work of Ralph Larmann is of particular relevance.

"In the field of events and entertainment technology, the photos and books of Ralph Larmann are very well known," explains Kitzing, who was awarded the German stage prize ‘Opus' at this year's Musikmesse in Frankfurt. "His photos are fantastic at demonstrating the way technology is deployed at today's major events; what's more, he has an outstanding feeling for moods and perspectives."
