ABTT Annual Award Winners

The 31st Annual ABTT Awards ceremony was staged for the first time at The Royal Horticultural Halls where leading industry organisations eagerly anticipated the news on who would scoop the much coveted Hook Clamp Trophy Awards.

Entries this year were all of an excellent standard and the winners were:

Best New Rigging Product was awarded to Hoist UK for its Lightweight Aluminium Grid Stand Hoist, which is a fully certified frame for chain hoists. The Honourable Mention was given to Centre Stage Engineering for its Artisan Control.

Best New Lighting Product was presented to RC4's Wireless DMX system, which is a cost effective point-to-point DMX system. The Honourable mention went to Avolites for their Art 2000 system.

The Best New Sound Product was awarded to Sound Technology for its new Soundcraft S12 digital mixing console, which was commended for its easy and intuitive layout making the transition from analogue to digital very simple. This category boasted two Honourable Mentions being given to d&b audiotechnic for its new T-series line array and to FeOmic for its audio drive unit. Plus Orbital Sound was given a ‘Special Mention' for its innovative risk assessment software, which complies with noise at work.

The Widget of the Year was given to AC Lighting for its new Bunka Floor Stand, which is designed not only to take a TV spigot but also has 48 mm pipe at the side for hook clamps and the like. Honourable Mentions in this category were for the CPC headset available in many colours and the Spiky Washer from Set Up Scenery.

Stand of the Year was awarded to Flints Theatrical Chandlers. Not only an ‘Aladdin's Cave' of useful theatrical tools, but also a practical prop making workshop. Honourable mentions in this category were awarded to XL Video and Doughty Engineering.

Technician of the Year was presented to John Tapster a well - respected lighting wizard currently working on ‘We Will Rock You" in Newcastle.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to Stage Engineer, Paul Sadler.

The Phil Windsor Award was presented to Philip L Edwards for his mentoring role for students of lighting design.

Heather Van Wyck presented two bursaries for ABTT Training in memory of her late husband Nick Van Wyck.

The Association of Lighting Designers presented two special achievement awards to Brian Croft and John Simpson for helping LDs make their productions look their best. The ALD's chairman, Rick Fisher, who had just flown in from New York where he'd received his second Tony Award for the lighting design of Billy Elliot, presented the awards
