All mod cons from Innovason at Le Confort Moderne

Le Confort Moderne in Poitiers is a surprising place. A veritable Tardis, the venue is unprepossessing (not to say slightly off-putting) from the outside, yet once inside, the visitor is exposed to 5000 square metres of modern and contemporary theatre and exhibition space. Billed as a "conceptual laboratory" Le Confort Moderne has been engaged since 1985 in the creation, production and diffusion of original works of contemporary art, music and trans-disciplinary experimentation. As part of a significant monitor system upgrade from a completely analogue solution to a largely digital one complete with EtherSound network, Le Confort Moderne recently invested in an Sy48 digital console from Innovason.
The new system was designed and installed by Z Professionnel, a Bordeaux-based rental company with offices in Poitiers. The company also has a thriving installation wing that specialises in theatre and live music venue installations. According to Z Professionnel's Bruno Gondrecourt, the brief was to optimise the existing Nexo system. "There was nothing wrong with the existing stage monitors (Nexo PS15s), but the rest of the installation was no longer up to modern standards and needed to be replaced," he explained. "At the heart of the system is a fully loaded Innovason Sy48 with EtherSound capability. To that we added an AES/EBU to EtherSound bridge, a PC running Auvitran's ES-Monitor software for network management, and finally we swapped out the old Nexo TD analogue processors for NX242 digital controllers with NXtension-ES4 Expander Boards which improve processing capacities and add digital I/Os plus remote control functions via an EtherSound network."
Z Professionnel's David Rocher who actually designed the system is very pleased with the results. "The signal-to-noise ratio has been greatly improved thanks to the fact that we're now in the digital domain from the mic preamps in the desk all the way out to the amplifiers for the stage monitors," he noted. "The improved processing in the NX242s has also given us much better control of the loudspeakers."
"However, the biggest improvements are definitely thanks to the Sy48," noted Rocher. "The 48 user-configurable faders mean that it is the only console on the market today that enables the engineer to have total control of every element of his show at his fingertips. However, despite its enormous capabilities, the Sy48 remains one of the simplest consoles to operate - even the most die-hard analogue engineers are up and running in no time. It's compact footprint has considerably reduced the amount of real estate in monitor world, which is a big consideration for Le Confort Moderne, and it has also enabled conversion to an EtherSound network at a reasonable price for the client. Furthermore, as the Sy48 is also a fully self-contained mobile system that can handle both FoH and monitors, it has given the venue the flexibility to hold smaller gigs in the lobby/bar area, which is a major plus point."
"Last but not least, there is the legendary Innovason sound," he continued. "With the possible exception of the new Eclipse, which we've not tried yet but will do very soon, Sy48 offers the best value for money in terms of sound quality and functionality than any other console on the market."
