Boost Your Career Opportunities with a Diploma in Acoustics
Are you interested in a career in acoustics? Did you obtain a degree in a science or engineering-based subject? If so then the Institute of Acoustics' Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control could be your path to a career in acoustics.
The IOA's Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control, which has recently been revised and updated, is regarded as a significant qualification for those wanting to pursue a professional career related to acoustics and noise control.
The course is open to anyone with a degree in a science or engineering based subject and prospective students should enrol for the course in August to commence the course in September.
The diploma course was set up to provide specialist academic training to meet the educational requirements for Corporate Membership of the Institute of Acoustics. Over the years the course has become well established as providing high level training in real-world practical acoustics. The diploma is widely recognised as the leading specialist qualification for the professional practitioner in acoustics. Also several UK universities recognise it as providing partial exemption from their requirements for the award of MSc degrees.
The diploma programme is offered over a single academic year and incorporates the following core modules:
- General Principles of Acoustics
- Laboratory (execution and reporting of Centre-dependent laboratory exercises)
- Project (intended to demonstrate the ability to use and apply the skills and knowledge gained in the other modules of the Diploma to define and solve an acoustics problem including a research element as appropriate)
and two specialist modules selected from:
- Building Acoustics
- Regulation and Assessment of Noise
- Environmental Noise: Measurement, Prediction and Control
- Noise and Vibration Control Engineering
The course is run through six accredited centres throughout the country in Bristol, Colchester, Epsom, Salford, Leeds and Derby.
There is a distance learning option aimed at candidates unable to attend centre-based courses in the usual way. The distance learning route is supported by a programme of group tutorials at a small number of venues in the UK and Ireland. Distance Learning students in the UK are required to attend two two-day laboratory sessions.
The Diploma is awarded for the successful completion of the General Principles of Acoustics module and the Laboratory module, together with any two further specialist modules, which are through a written examination and assignments and the submission of a project report.

Such work needs a comprehensive working knowledge of the principles and practical applications of acoustics and this course fits the bill perfectly. For those wishing to succeed in professional activities relating to acoustics and noise control, this qualification satisfies the academic requirements for Corporate Membership of the Institute of Acoustics which, in turn, is an important and widely-accepted way of demonstrating an individual's professional competence in the field."
