Now RM Lighting Signs Up to Impression

The wholesale success of GLP's Impression LED moving head - which became an immediate hit with both television lighting directors and concert touring LD's on its launch - is now finding its way steadily into the corporate world.

As the latest UK customer, Rob Mander of RM Lighting set out all 16 of his newly-purchased heads recently for a VIP launch of a new lifestyle magazine at a swish venue in London's Mayfair.

Rob pinpointed the advantages of the GLP fixture. "These Impressions are so bright yet lightweight that we can both ground support and truss-mount them around the perimeter of a room to provide a constant colour changing atmosphere. However, at the same time we can use them on stage to highlight the performers, as the RGB versions produce a higher light yield than that of a conventional moving light or parcan."

South London-based RM Lighting purchased the 16 heads from GLP's UK representative Stuart Fenwick. "It was a no brainer as I had not only seen these demonstrated at trade shows such as PLASA, but was also attracted by their aggressive marketing; there is an amazing buzz flying around the industry."

In the short time Rob has had them, different configurations of the Impression have been out on just about all his shows - including the magazine launch, where he was working for production company Studio Boardman.

"Clients just love the Impressions; everyone remarks on just how bright they are - and the colour accuracy and low power consumption are further bonuses," he said. In addition to the punch provided by 90 high-powered RGB LEDs, each Impression weighs just 7.5kg giving it enormous versatility. Run off RM Lighting's Hog III lighting desk, it will deliver a complete 660° pan in just 2 seconds.

The ten-year-old company has a full and varied order book this summer - ranging from festivals to theatre shows - and some major events are planned near the end of the year. Rob Mander's aim is to continue servicing his many clients. With the light's popularity in mind, he said, "Although we would be able to sub-hire in additional Impressions, this will not be cost-effective long-term, and we will almost certainly need to purchase more before the end of the year."

A curious footnote is that Rob Mander's company is the second UK-based ‘RML' to stock quantities of the Impression in their hire fleet - the other being TV specialists Richard Martin Lighting.
