Ard Soilse at the Clonmel Junction Festival

Ard Soilse at the Clonmel Junction Festival

For the fourth successive year, Ard Soilse Productions Ltd was the production company of choice the this years Clonmel Junction Festival.

"The festival presents new and interesting challenges each year", comments Ard Soilse director Joe Betts "its dynamic portfolio of productions has very specific needs, and meeting them all in a fast moving festival environment requires good, versatile equipment which can stand up to constant heavy use, while at the same time being dynamic enough to perform for many varying artists."

Once again our Elation design 300E spot and wash fixtures were the lamps of choice, due to their high light yield, low power consumption and impeccable feature set.

The Chadwicks Theatre venue is a large warehouse, which we converted into a theatre venue with two stages for the festival. The main rig was based around four Design spot 300E and 6 Design wash 300E fixtures, and a stock of ETC Source Fours, Par 64s and Cantata Fresnels. The CMY unit in the Design 300E fixtures is very smooth, which allows for great colour fades, perfect for theatre productions.

Because of the two stage setup, show change-overs were very fast. For this reason a Jands vista i3 was used to control both stages. The visual plotting allowed designers to see the lamps on each stage, and program their shows all on one desk. This meant fast change-overs with minimum time wasted.

Lighting was not the only challenge the Chadwicks venue presented. The festival has a strong association with Aerial performances, so rigging has to be designed to facilitate performer flying points. Ard Soilse supplied 11 CM Lodestar Hoists, along with over 70 meters of Milos Truss. A 7M x 3M H-shaped truss was dead hung in the apex of the roof, to allow three performers to attach bungees in the middle of a roof bay, without the loss of height and high dynamic loading that would be caused by bridling. The H truss was stabilised against swinging with four tensioned wires, installed at 45 degrees to the centre beam, which further minimised the dynamic loading on the venue roof.

The Devannes Riverside stage presented Ard Soilse with the challenge of providing a lighting package that could perform for big name acts, but run of a 20A single phase power supply. Once again the Elation Design spot 300E was the fixture of choice. Its small size and carefully calibrated optics mean that its light yield is equivalent to most other 575w fixtures, but it uses almost half the power. Six Design spot 300E units were used, along with 12 LED pars and four LED tubes to create a great look with minimum power consumption. A Jands Vista T2 console was specified for this event, for its powerful programming features, and fast touch screen control, allowing designers to program their shows effortlessly, and in minutes.
