ConTour Array at the Bang Your Head Warm-Up Show

ConTour Array at the Bang Your Head Warm-Up Show

The Bang Your Head Festival is one of Germany's most important Heavy Metal events and this year marked the 14th time it was held in the Swabian town of Balingen. Bang Your Head is a two-day open-air festival, starting with a ‘Warm-up Show' on the Thursday evening that has achieved something of cult status.

In years past, the Warm-Up Show took place in a small club, but this year it expanded into the newly opened Volksbank Messehalle (convention centre), where over 1500 metal enthusiasts assembled to hear the high-caliber acts Kreator, Jon Oliva's Pain, Evile and Snake Ride Rodeo. To handle the audio for this show, the rental company Prolite Event GmbH from Balingen deployed an HK Audio ConTour array system with five CTA 208 mid/high units and eight CT 118 subwoofers on each side of the stage. For extra low-end, five SL 218 Sublow cabs were set right below the stage. Additionally, HK Audio DSM 2060 controllers and Labgruppen FP 10000 power amps were chosen to drive the FOH PA.

Frank Pfister, general manager of Prolite Event GmbH, said of the system: "For over two years now we've been using the ConTour array at all kinds of events and are very satisfied with it. But a metal gig with a powerful group like Kreator and an audience of over 1500-now that's a real stress test for a compact system like this. All the more reason why we're so excited. The PA passed this test with flying colours, and all the visiting sound engineers here have been giving us nothing but compliments. Plus, we've already lined up the same gig for next year. What more could you ask for?"

American Jan Javier, FOH engineer for Jon Oliva's Pain, commented: "I knew HK Audio way back when the R-Series was big; I did a number of gigs with that system in the US and liked it very much. I've also run across HK Audio systems again and again at a number of festivals in Europe. Right after the sound check at the Bang Your Head Warm-Up Show, I was already very pleased with what I heard. But after the show, when I got more information about the system and learned that each of the mid/high units had only two 8" and four 1" drivers and found out what the system actually cost, I was impressed. When you consider the output and the good low mids, the ConTour array system delivers a huge bang for the buck!"

Stage monitoring was all HK Audio. For main monitors, the tried and true rock ‘n' roll classic SM 212 2x12"/2" cabinets were used, and CT 112 12"/1.4" floor wedges from the ConTour Series served as frontfills and other monitors.
