RaceTech AV Provides Royal Solutions for Epsom with Community

The specialist racecourse technical services company, RaceTech AV, has recently installed Community R-Series and VERIS loudspeakers as part of the development of the famous Epsom Downs Racecourse. The £38m, three-year project was commissioned by Jockey Club Racecourses and included the construction of the new 11,000 capacity Duchess Grandstand.

Horse racing takes place at the course on only 14 days of the year, so the facility encompasses full banqueting, conferencing, exhibition and dining facilities to provide its diverse revenue streams.

The heart of the new facilities is the multipurpose Oaks Hall. To make this facility truly multi-purpose, a highly-specified audio-visual system with flexible digital infrastructure was required. RaceTech AV used a BSS Soundweb to provide a system in which, for most positions within the Hall, the audio image is strongly located at the stage end of the room. "Two Community VERIS1596 loudspeakers provide the main focus, with twenty VERIS28 and ten VERIS8 providing the distributed delay system. The impression is that the delay loudspeakers within the room are not even on, although coverage down the length of this reverberant room is extremely even, achieving excellent speech intelligibility despite the acoustic environment," explained Robin Dibble, RaceTech AV's Audio Systems Engineer. "The main centre section of the Oaks Hall is configured in stereo with mono side fills and two pairs of stereo inputs are available to the system from the hall, allowing outside technical facility providers to benefit from this room's optimised system."

Robin Dibble is very pleased with the integration. "For large scale events clients have to bring nothing other than their own video sources, PC's and playback devices. We offer IR assisted listening and break-out boxes for local plug-in, with multi-way tie lines which come up to the control position. If any clients want to do anything out of the ordinary we can remotely connect into the Soundweb network to make any necessary changes."

For the main grandstand, Dibble turned to the tried and tested Community R-Series. Six Community R1 provide the main system, with six R.5 providing downfill for the upper levels of the stand. "This configuration is a proven standard", comments Dibble, "It provides natural speech with high intelligibility, excellent pattern control and all-weather durability. I have had many years experience of these products and can totally rely on them to give exactly the quality and results we need".

RaceTech AV installed a further four Community R.25 loudspeakers to provide audio for the outside public areas at the rear of the Duchess Grandstand.

Epsom is the fifth premier UK racecourse to use Community R-Series, joining Doncaster, Newbury, Aintree and Sandown Park.
