Much like its Eastern European neighbours, Bulgaria has experienced some rapid growth in the night club sector in recent years, possibly reflecting the increasing levels of disposable income among the young adult populations that typically fuel that market. Club Deluxe, in the southern city of Asenovgrad, close to Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv, is a perfect example of the shiny new dance music clubs springing up across the country.

Located in over 500 sq metres, split across two floor levels, Club Deluxe is open six days a week running from Monday to Saturday and caters for just about every musical genre from retro and pop to house and techno. Designed by leading acoustic and stage lighting specialist, Eliana Spasov - the style of the club is very distinctly modern, with an arty-industrial feel to it. Low level neon and laser lighting is used carefully throughout, coupled with industrial, metallic surfaces, to create the look of a club that wouldn't look out of place in Berlin or London rather than Southern Bulgaria.

A successful club venue relies not only on it's aesthetic appeal however, but on delivering an audio experience that matches or exceeds the expectations of the clientele it hopes to attract, and that's where Club Deluxe has an ace up its sleeve. It's the first venue in Bulgaria to have Tannoy's new VQ Series loudspeakers installed, in the shape of a pair of VQ 100 enclosures, coupled with a pair of the company's impressive new VS 218DR subwoofers. Launched at last year's ProLight+Sound show in Frankfurt, Tannoy have raised the bar with their VQ Series in terms of loudspeaker efficiency and performance.

VQ's extremely high sensitivity ensures exceptional SPL levels can be achieved with a very modest amount of amplifier power. As an example, the VQ will produce 115dB for 1 Watt; and 138dB (144dB peak) for only 200 Watts of amplifier power. Couple this with the exceptional pattern control above 800Hz, in this case within a 100 degree dispersion (and 60 degree for the VQ 60) and the resulting performance of VQ is hard to match with any other single enclosure solution.

Designed and installed by Sofia-based A/V specialists Bulcomp, the club's sound system also consists of some of TANNOY's highly successful V-Series loudspeakers (a pair of V6s and pair of V12s) providing fills where necessary, all powered by three Lab.gruppen C-Series amplifiers and controlled by a pair of Tannoy VNET SC1 digital network controllers. Bulcomp's sales manager, Peter Ivanov, was extremely pleased with the results of this first VQ club install for Bulgaria, as was the client. "The general feeling from both DJ's and patrons is that the sound is very clear and exceptionally transparent, perfectly suited both for live performance or for DJ sets. Even with relatively few speakers, the sound is extremely loud, something the club owner was keen to achieve with minimal impact on the carefully designed interior style."
