Orbital Sound Re-equips Theatre Rigs with TASCAM HD-R1 Solidstate Recorder

Orbital Sound Ltd. has replaced all of its CD and MiniDisc recorders in its sound rigs with Tascam's HD-R1 CF card / USB solidstate media recorders. The company has already taken delivery of 23 HD-R1s, with a further 10 units on order. The initial order was to meet the company's requirements for more than 20 productions in major theatre venues nationwide over the busy festive season.
The Tascam HDR1 solidstate recorder is designed to exploit the advantages of latest generation file based digital media in professional audio and AV integration applications, previously fulfilled by CD/CDR, MiniDisk, cassette tape and commodity PCs. The HD-R1 provides recording and storage of MP3 and uncompressed .WAV file formats to both Compact Flash memory cards and USB removable storage devices, in conjunction with advanced IP network capabilities.
Key features include better than CD quality sound - up to 24bit / 96kHz signal quality, non linear editing, Auto Cue/Ready, Power-on-Play, and a variety of programmable playback modes, RS232 and parallel control, and 100Mbit Ethernet IP network transfer and control capabilities. Line level and balanced microphone inputs with switchable phantom power, high quality mic pre-amps and discrete front panel rotary input level controls, mean that the unit can be function without need of a rackmixer in installations.
Orbital Sound hire manager, Phil Dormer, explains why the company committed to the Tascam solidstate player to service its heavy seasonal rental commitments: "It's a vitally important time of year for us and we needed something extremely reliable, easy to use out of the box, and fast to configure with .WAV sound files - the HD-R1 does the job exceptionally well. We have now consolidated everything onto one neat format and the operators love it!
"The HD-R1s are now deployed on all our Christmas shows, replacing our previous generation CD and MiniDisc recorders. We typically use two units per installation, and have more than twenty Christmas shows out at any one time at most of the UK's leading venues around the country."
