Wicreations, EML and Kinesys Build Flying Fridge for Chanel

For its latest fashion show on March 9 Chanel constructed an iceberg style runway in the Grand Palais in Paris. And to prevent the iceberg from melting and flooding the fashionistas a giant fridge was placed over the 240-ton ice sculpture. Just before the show started it was hoisted up in the air.
Wicreations of Tremelo, Belgium furnished all necessary equipment, engineering and people for the construction to take off. The fridge, a giant thermos of 50 x 13 metres and 5.6 T, was lifted by 14 0.5T Varistar hoists. The two 40m lighting trusses that were mounted inside the box were lifted by 10 0.5 T zero speed liftchamp hoists. The major challenge was to synchronise all these hoists for the lift-ff to a height of 15m.
But all went according to plan, thanks to Kinesys K2 3d software. "As always, we offered a complete motion control service," says Hans Willems, director of Wicreations. "This means a strength calculation, to check the structure strength in all positions, a hoist reaction check in all positions to make sure the hoists are in the right spot to get the perfect load distribution in order to avoid overloads.and last but certainly not least a BGVC1 safety check to make sure that the lift-off button could be
pressed without any risk. Providing all this in a single package made it possible to deliver the project in a short amount of time."
The iceberg fashion show was masterminded by Karl Lagerfeld who, for one thing, isn't so sure about global warming. "Have you felt any warming this winter?" he asked reporters after the show. "Maybe it's all nonsense." In an attempt to prove his point, Lagerfeld had erected the huge iceberg in the middle of the glass-domed
Grand Palais. The models were dressed in fake fur trousers and yeti boots to prepare them for the coming ice age. Cool!
