But just days before his return to Canada, Tapiero arrived to his Haitian residence to find it engulfed in flames. His MacBook Pro was burned, his backup drive and music collection were destroyed, and his Metric Halo ULN-2 emerged from a drawer as hot as if it had been roasted in an oven.

Perimeter Church in suburban Atlanta, Georgia does a fantastic job of ministering in a way that connects emotionally and culturally with all members of the church community. Middle and high schoolers attend services in The Hanger, a 1,000-seat sanctuary devoted to the themes that resonate with the unique challenges and aesthetics of young adults. However, in the five long years since its completion, The Hanger has suffered from grossly inadequate sound reinforcement, including poor coverage and anaemic bass. To remedy the situation, Perimeter technical director Steve Simmons designed and installed a Danley Sound Labs-based system that now delivers even coverage and enough clean, undistorted bass to “knock the breath out of you,” in Simmons’ words.

“Des Femmes” by Canadian writer and director, Wajdi Mouawad, is a controversial production of a trilogy of Greek tragedies by Sophocles. A dramatic and unsettling blend of theatre and rock music, the tension generated by “Des Femmes” is significantly heightened by the participation of French rock star Bertrand Cantat, formerly of the group Noir Désir. Cantat, who was convicted of killing his girlfriend, actress Marie Trintignan, in 2003 during a violent domestic dispute, wrote the music for the production and is performing a certain number of dates. The rest will be performed by singer Igor Quezeda. Mouawad justified the inclusion of Cantat by saying, “Electra, Antigone and The Women of Trachis are plays about justice and revenge ... Cantat’s presence at the edge of the action will make those themes more powerful."

It was a unique confluence of events in late October that led to a mind-expanding technical tour for participants of the annual AES conference in New York City. Veteran classical music engineer and educator Bill Siegmund of Digital Island Studios, LLC, organised the “Live Organ Recital Recording” tour, a rather grey title for an event that ended up lively and colourful. The recording took place at New York’s famed St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Well known as ‘the jazz church,’ St. Peter’s current sanctuary resides below the Citigroup Building and was constructed with an ear for music. Celebrated organist Walter Hilse played the church’s massive Klais manual tracker organ, and Siegmund recorded it with the help of his trusty Metric Halo interfaces. The event allowed participants to reflect not just on the mechanics of mic placement and remote monitoring, but also on the philosophical underpinnings of recording and the place of recorded music in today’s technological zeitgeist.

Nutcracker Magic, a new adaptation of the holiday classic, is an elaborate stage production that combines the best of Western and Eastern dance and performance art. Fourteen ballet dancers and 70 acrobats tell the story of a young ballet student and her journey to win a dance competition. Nutcracker Magic’s creative team, including Ric Birch, best known for his directing of the Olympics’ opening ceremonies, and Liu Jun, a dancer and choreographer for the German Royal Ballet, incorporated features of the show’s 2000-seat venue, the state of the art Shanghai Culture Square theatre, into the production. Not only does the space have a water-fountain stage and surround sound, it was built 26 metres underground, making it the deepest underground theatre in the world.

ShowTex Netherlands supplied all stage drapes, curtain tracks, and projection screens for the Kilden Performing Arts Centre in Kristiansand. The arts centre is built to accommodate Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Opera Sør and a number of local theatre groups. The Centre opened its doors in October for guided tours and sneak previews and will have its official grand opening in January 2012. The ambitious project has been in the works for several years and will meet the cultural needs of the entire south coast of Norway.
The building has four stages: a concert hall with 1185 seats, a theatre and opera hall with 708 seats, a multi-purpose space with 234 seats and an intimate hall with 150 seats.

As part of a massive five-year renovation project that culminated in a star-studded opening ceremony last month, Moscow’s premier playhouse, the Theatre of Nations, has been equipped with an APG loudspeaker system. Designed, supplied and installed by Russian pro audio and lighting specialists, Doka Center, who also supplied the fully motorized lighting and staging systems, the main audio system is based around APG’s versatile DS Series loudspeakers. Phase two of the renovation project, which is scheduled for early in 2012 and will include more APG equipment, will concentrate on the renovation of the theatre’s smaller hall.
