Delstar Engineering, Stage Technologies Supply Floor Lifts and Controls for EICC’s new Lennox Suite
Following years of design and planning the new Lennox Suite has opened in the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The Lennox Suite is a one
?of?a?kind multi?purpose hall with a bespoke, flexible moving floor system that can be reconfigured into various set ups for the different requirements of event organisers - at the touch of a button. For example, the flooring options include a flat floor for exhibitions; tiered banquets accommodating up to 750 guests; a raked auditorium for 2,000 people; and an arena with room for 1,400 spectators.
Delstar Engineering, part of the Stage Technologies Group, secured a prominent role in the design of this project in October 2009. Over the lifetime of the project Delstar’s mechanical design team then created various innovative solutions to achieve the multiple configurations required for this revolutionary venue. Delstar supplied the mechanical design, build and installation of the Lennox Suite’s floor lifts, whilst Stage Technologies provided the control system for the lifts.
The lifts enable venue staff to adapt to a variety of client needs, including: flat floor mode The Hall is ideally suited as a heavy duty exhibition space; cabaret mode Delegate or dining can be accommodated for 700 with full stage facilities; large auditorium seating is available for 2000 delegates with conference stage facilities; double auditorium seating is facing a central stage; arena mode - the central stage is flanked by seating in the round; two acoustic walls - the walls can be deployed as required to reduce the available floor area into three separate spaces or two for smaller events.
In the project’s early days Gala Systems had provided venue consultants The Right Solution with a proposal scheme for the floor. Consultants Theatre Projects also worked with the design team to define the project requirements for the Lennox Suite. Delstar then developed the brief into an innovative engineering solution allowing the venue to reconfigure the floor as needed. Delstar designed lifts cover a nominal floor area of 30 metres by 51 metres. In order to allow for the different floor configurations, the lifts have risers built into the platforms.
Delstar was able to test the fully assembled lifts at its factory in Haverhill, Suffolk.
For further versatility, adjacent spaces can be used simultaneously. Each configuration uses the fully carpeted floor with services in strategically located floor traps. A variety of staircase and railings complement the various configurations.
One of the biggest benefits of the system is that it requires only two trained venue staff members to enable quick and safe mode changes, by utilising a complex arrangement of interlocks and controls.
Ken Golding, managing director of Delstar Engineering and the lead on the project, said: "This project has been a credit to our staff and a showcase of the mechanical and electrical capabilities within our company. We are also indebted to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and to Sir Robert McAlpine for their support throughout the project."
EICC chief executive Hans H Rissmann OBE said: "No other venue in the world can offer its customers the time and space saving benefits of a hall
?wide moving floor system and with this outstanding technology we are defining city centre conferences and events for the new era."
