Prog Rockers Kansas Carry On Marking 40-Year Milestone with Elaborate Concert

Wayward sons and legendary prog-rockers Kansas carry on by commemorating their 40-year anniversary with a one-off special concert on August 17th at Benedum Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Selling out in a matter of minutes, the show was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for loyal fans (“Wheatheads”) to celebrate the milestone, but also to see the band in a unique setting. Accompanied by a 41-piece symphony orchestra in the first act, the next offered a traditional, rocking set of their classics. The event brought together original members for the first time in 30 years: the five touring members (original members Phil Ehart, Steve Walsh, Richard Williams, and long time members Billy Greer and David Ragsdale), as well as guest spots by original members Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope.

Robe’s ROBIN MMX WashBeam moving lights were used for the first time at a London Fashion Week show by the UK’s leading fashion lighting designer Nick Gray of creative practice Renegade. Gray lit two high profile off-site shows, Jasper Conran at the Saatchi Gallery and Roksanda at The Place, London Bridge, for London Fashion Week SS14 last week using MMX WashBeams. It was the first time Gray has used Robe moving lights in his fashion work. He is also the LD for rockers Kasabian, comedian Eddie Izzard and is an internationally exhibited video and light artist.

Emitting an intense but diffused cool light the units produced a myriad of pixel mapped effects which looked fabulous on the global live broadcast.

Projection Advertising has created an exciting new 3D video-mapping spectacular to promote Bear Grylls’ new television series Escape From Hell, which will be shown on the Discovery Channel from 7th October. Beamed onto Battersea Power Station on 25th September, the fire-themed projection was augmented by pyrotechnics and was part of a larger launch event organised by Discovery Networks International, where clips from the new series were screened to around 500 guests. So realistic was the projection mapping show, fire fighters were called out to deal with the apparent blaze!

Held in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace and organised by the Royal Warrant Holders Association, the event combined an exhibition of over 200 suppliers to the Royal household with a spectacular three nights of musical performances. With artists ranging from individual performers like Russell Watson, Katherine Jenkins and Katie Melua to large scale group artists such as The National Youth Orchestra and the English National Ballet, any lighting design would have to be flexible and dynamic enough to cover every demand and yet stay sensitive enough to function as a live show for a 600 strong audience whilst being filmed for a prime BBC TV Saturday night slot.

Looking to deliver world-class lighting in the state-of-the-art venue, Tom Kenny was contracted to design an equally impressive light show to entertain thousands in attendance and millions watching at home. Harman’s Martin lighting fixtures, supplied by VER, lined the stage and house, providing a multi-function professional lighting rig.
