UK – Now in its 28th year, The Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Year Awards in Association with Vitality, had led the way in recognising and celebrating the contribution to sport by elite performers, coaches, administrators, community volunteers and inspirational women.

The Awards took place on Friday 6th November and was aired live on Sky Sports 1 and for the first time, simultaneously on Sky 1, which is another reflection of the importance of these occasions. Since the top six nominated woman were announced at the end of October, the vote has been open to the public and voting has been made to accessible with campaigns on social media including.

Richard Martin Lighting (RML) supported the night by providing lights for both the main auditorium and also outside of the main SKY building. The project is so vast that it has required two LDs! Richard Bowles and Iain Davidson selected an exciting array of different fixtures which should vreate a real spectacle!

The impressive rig is made up of LED Beam 100, Mac Auras, SGM P5, Super Nova Flowers, Chroma Flood RGB, HO Uplighters, GLP Impressions and ROBIN 600 LEDWash.

Richard said: “I used SGM P5s as they are simple and quick to rig, and very effective at lighting buildings. The extensive use of wireless DMX meant that there were no cables across busy walkways. Chroma Floods and IP Pixel Pars were used to highlight architectural areas and to provide glitz and glamour to the red carpet. Super Nova Flowers were used to give animation and life to the trees and buildings, as well as add to the excitement for visitors. Finally, large numbers of battery HO uplighters were used in corridors and reception areas, to continue the path of light for visitors from the moment they arrived into the studio.”

I was also lucky enough to grab a brief word with Iain who said, ‘In the studio we used the LEDBeam 100’s to light each table, allowing concentrated pools of light, choice of colour and easy repositioning as the tables moved around the room. I also used Mac Aura's to wash the stage area and in "aura mode" to provide some interest in the back of shot.’

Previous winners of the coveted Sportswoman of the Year accolade include Sally Gunnell, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Zara Phillips, Victoria Pendleton, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Christine Ohuruogu and Maggie Alphonsi.

This year the prize went to Jessica Ennis-Hill. The 29-year-old, who also won in 2012, claimed her second World Championship heptathlon title in August, only 13 months after giving birth to her son.

The evening proved once again why it has established itself as one of the biggest nights in the sporting calendar.
