USA – Since premiering as an unassuming rave back in 1997 in LA, the adult playground that is today’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) has spread across the US and indeed the world. Orlando has hosted its own version since 2011 and LD Steve Lieberman has been lighting it ever since. This year, he designed a remarkable megastructure for the Circuit Grounds stage plus the accompanying lighting scheme that was just as impressive, teaming Elation Platinum Spot 35 Pro moving heads with Colour Chorus LED strip lights, among other Elation gear and other lighting. UK – The IK Prize is awarded annually for an idea that uses innovative technology to enable the public to discover, explore and enjoy British art from the Tate collection in new ways. This year's winner was Tate Sensorium, an exploration into how the senses can be stimulated in a gallery space, developed by creative studio Flying Object. It was an immersive display featuring four paintings. Visitors to the installation experienced sounds, smells, tastes and physical forms inspired by the artworks and could record and review their physiological responses through sophisticated measurement devices. Developed over nine months, Flying Object's creation defied the conventional view of a gallery space by importing a spectrum of sensory elements. Where food is usually prohibited, there was chocolate and where being quiet would be the status quo there was audio.

USA – Lighting designer Jason Ayala was understandably excited by the thought of doing an event for the Global Spin Awards at Manhattan’s Metropolitan West, not just because of the prestigious client, but also because of the venue itself. Like many New Yorkers, the LD had a special affinity for the sturdy two storey building at 639 W. 46th Street in the city’s Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood. Prior to becoming the go-to place for chic events like Versace’s NY Fashion Week Runway Show, the 12,000 square foot building had achieved iconic status in the city as the home of H&H Bagel, the world’s largest bagel factory, which at one time turned out over 80,000 of the hard circular rolls a day. The closure of H&H facility after its owner was indicted for tax fraud and its subsequent rebirth as a premier event centre only enhanced its mystique.

Canada – Oblique FX created 123 visual effects shots for Sicario, the latest film from director Denis Villeneuve. Sicario tells the story of a young FBI agent (Emily Blunt) thrown into the violent and lawless world of the drug trade across the US/Mexico border. A gritty, realistic drama, the story required subtle effects work to blend seamlessly with the cinematography of Roger Deakins. Oblique FX, the main visual effects vendor on the project, contributed CG vehicles, set extensions, blood and wound effects, and, in one grisly scene, mutilated bodies hanging from a bridge – all indistinguishable from the live action elements in the film.

It all started way back in 1897 at the Hotel Bristol in Berlin, when eight motor vehicles were put on public display. From those beginnings, a regular show came into being. In 1991, the event was split into a car show, which is held on odd-numbered years in Frankfurt, and a commercial vehicle show, held on even-numbered years in Hanover. The latest research into the effects of light on the human body (human-centric lighting) is being applied to boost the fitness levels of the sportsmen during pre-season training and throughout the competition season itself. Feedback from the athletes shows that they are impressed by how much the right light can help. “We are always looking for new ways to improve. In biologically effective light we have found a highly promising lever,” said Karlheinz Waibel, head coach for science and technology at the DSV.
