UK – Sadler's Wells Theatre is synonymous with dance in the UK and its name is famous the world over. The present day Grade 2 Listed theatre is the sixth on the site at Rosebery Avenue, Clerkenwell in the London Borough of Islington and is part of a history that stretches back to 1683. The current incarnation opened in 1998, one of the first projects to receive funding from the National Lottery. Home to award-winning and ground-breaking productions, Sadler's Wells stages a richly diverse range of national and international collaborations. In 2013 Sadler's Wells embarked on a comprehensive upgrading of its infrastructure and technology, to improve both front of house and backstage environments in its 1568-seater main auditorium. Renowned theatre consultant Roger Spence was placed in charge of the project and engaged a team comprising designer Graham Large of Chapman BDSP, integrators Stage Electrics and award-winning lighting manufacturers GDS. Roger and Graham had collaborated on the 1998 rebuilding of Sadler's Wells some ten years earlier, so this was very much a case of placing new technology into trusted hands.

Staged at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the project involved a VIP evening’s entertainment hosted by the MWC’s headline sponsor, a major Chinese telecoms manufacturer. UK and Asia – After the death of Charlatans drummer Jon Brooks in 2013, The Charlatans have finally come together again to celebrate his life and passion for music with a new album, Modern Nature. On drums, they recruited three temporary drummers: Stephen Morris of New Order, Gabe Gurnsey of Factory Floor and Pete Salisbury of The Verve. The album release in January preceded the tour of the UK and Asia (Tokyo, Taipei and Osaka). The 15 gig tour over three weeks kicked off at the O2 Academy in Bristol on 3rd March and ends in Osaka, Japan on 25th March. The Charlatans’ lighting designer Andy Liddle appointed Hawthorn to provide the band’s lighting and projection requirements for the entire tour.

Germany – In the course of this year’s Ruhrtriennale festival, Kultur Ruhr GmbH staged a musical/theatrical production of Le Sacre du Printemps in the Gebläsehalle Duisburg, once the blasting hall of the Thyssen iron and steel works. The leitmotif of the lavish production was the 'artistic' use of machines, which involved at one point dumping bone ash onto a surface 10 x 23 metres in extent. To make this installation possible, six mobile truss grids were used for the mounting of a total of 37 machines along with additional trusses for the luminaires, curtain rails, projection foils and protective canopies.

USA – Scottsdale is some 260 miles from Las Vegas, but for four nights in early February, visitors to this Phoenix suburb could have thought they were on the Vegas Strip, at least if they were among the 8,000 fans who turned out for The Coors Light Birds Nest. A four-day festival held in conjunction with the Waste Management Open, Birds Nest is one of the most eagerly anticipated 19th hole events on the PGA tour. Its unique work programme keeps costs low and campus community involvement high by employing students in a range of non-traditional student jobs under the direction of professionals, for nine of the campus's 16 buildings. USA – NBC Network News relies on six of API’s A2Ds when filming popular news programs such as Morning Joe, The Today Show, and Nightly News with Lester Holt in their Los Angeles studio. The six A2D mic pre-amps are put to work all day long, and are used in both the “Newsroom Set” and “Studio W” or Studio West. Audio engineer Stan Ouse explains: “The backdrop of the Newsroom Set is a functioning news room. In Studio W we support all of the NBC networks and we do shows and live shots all throughout the day. For example, last week we did Hardball with the host plus the guests. That studio can do a single live shot or a whole show, whatever we need.”

UK - When working as a lighting gaffer, David Oldroyd always struggled with the movement of kit in and out of location trucks especially on TV dramas with a small crew. The problem still bothered him when he took up his position as a rental agent with leading motion picture rental company Cinelease, so he began looking at ways of making the moving of kit easier. David knew that with the varied kit used on each job, any solution would have to be adaptable and so sat down with Doughty’s Dan Phillips to come up with a modular trolley system that could be easily adapted.
