Piers Shepperd to deliver seminar session at PLASA Focus: Leeds

PLASA Focus: Leeds has confirmed an additional session in its seminar programme, entitled From the Somerset hills to the Olympic Rings, which will see director of international technical production practice Wonder Works, Piers Shepperd (pictured), talk through some of the highlights – and lowlights – of his career.

For the past 25 years, Piers has worked in design, production management, lighting, automation and development of cutting edge manufacturing processes that have involved clients from Her Majesty the Queen, to Queen the rock band. He has worked for Vari-Lite, Theatre Projects and Brilliant Stages, amongst others. He moved into technical design in the late 1990s, working to deliver such critically acclaimed projects as We Will Rock You, U2’s Popmart Tour and Rolling Stones’ Licks World Tour.

During the last decade Piers has worked on a series of ‘mega events’ across Europe and Asia, starting in 2004 as associate technical director for the Athens Olympics Opening and Ceremonies. In 2006 he was head of technical design for the Doha Asian Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies and most recently technical director for the London 2012 Ceremonies, which included the flown molten Olympic rings, the cauldron and James Bond and the Queen’s amazing parachute stunt.

Piers’ not-to-be-missed session will start at the very beginning with his work as a volunteer in the Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton, and track his career through to helping deliver the London 2012 Olympic Ceremonies. His talk will also cover some very useful basic career advice and tips for getting along in the events industry.

“Piers has a fascinating career and this is sure to be an equally fascinating and informative session,” says Christopher Toulmin, director of events division at PLASA. “We are honoured that he has chosen to take part in PLASA Focus: Leeds 2015.”

From the Somerset hills to the Olympic Rings will take place on Wednesday 13th May at 11.00 in the Bury Theatre. To register, please visit
