White Light brings cavernous Wonderground to life for Les Enfants Terribles’ new experiential theatre
UK - The recent gala evening for Alice’s Adventures Underground saw team White Light venture down the rabbit hole for Les Enfants Terribles’ extraordinary new show, nestled deep in the Waterloo Vaults.
Now open for a strictly limited season, the multi-sensory production fuses puppetry, story-telling, music and spectacle with stage technology for an immersive experience unlike any other. Inviting intimate groups to choose their own adventure, different interactive elements recreate memorable scenes from Lewis Carol’s beloved novel, which has just celebrated its 150th anniversary.
The White Light team led by Gary O'Donnell, hire co-ordinator, worked closely alongside Paul Walmsley, chief electrician for the project, utilising the company's inventory to fulfil the extensive kit requirements. The design incorporated eight different rooms, all with an entirely bespoke set up and experience within. Fully networked via a central ETC Ion console, with a secondary unit for backup, the lighting system throughout included over 260 circuits of dimming.
O'Donnell says: “The most important remit for this brief was connecting all of the different elements and maintaining central control for ease and effectiveness of use. With our years of experience in delivering theatrical as well as a broad-range of other live event formats in unusual venues, we were expertly placed to help bring this ambitious project to life.”
Walmsley adds: “Dealing with White Light was, as usual, a pleasure from start to finish! In the planning stages we were able to talk through the entire production in person which meant that any issues were highlighted well in advance of the get in, ensuring an incredibly smooth LX install, even in a difficult location. The design of all aspects of the show continued to change right up until press night, so the flexibility that we were afforded by White Light in terms of our fixture choices and control infrastructure was invaluable. The quality and speed of technical support and response to our ever changing hire list was second to none, and White Light's size and efficiency meant that we were able to respond to design changes as quickly as possible, keeping the tech moving forward.”
Having recently worked on a variety of other experiential productions, including: The Generation of Z: Apocalypse; Against Captain’s Orders: a Journey into the Uncharted jointly presented by the National Maritime Museum and Punchdrunk Enrichment and a host of other projects for Punchdrunk, White Light is in a unique position to deliver events of this immersive nature.
