Shapeshifter Add Controlled Chaos to Mayhem Fest
USA – Sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drinks, this year's annual Mayhem Festival featured Slayer headlining the main stage, joined by King Diamond, Hellyeah and The Devil Wears Prada. The 2015 tour rocked 25 US cities before winding down in August. Slayer's lighting designer Jason Cain specified 20 High End Systems Shapeshifter C1s for the high profile shows, as well as a HOG 4 control system and Catalyst media servers.
Cain, who has worked with Slayer for the last seven years, says the Shapeshifter were brought in for the Mayhem shows as a replacement for another manufacturer's wash fixtures. He comments: "I first became aware of the Shapeshifter at the USITT trade show in Fort Worth, Texas. I was and still am very impressed with the C1's abilities. It produces a huge amount of light, and depending on the 'paddle' configuration, it's a smooth big beamy wash, or a fairly tight shaft of light. There were a total of 20 active units in the rig, and they were used as front wash and side/back wash.
"With a band like Slayer, it seems natural to strobe the shit out of everything, all the time. But I liked the capabilities of the fixtures to do other 'gags' that added movement and excitement, without the strobe."
Jason continues: "The HOG 4 full size was the desk used for the tour. In fact, it's my only desk of choice and always has been!” Macros were used in the programming, and proved to be very helpful. The movement and intensity macros were also great.
All lighting, trussing and video for the Mayhem Festival was supplied by Gemini Light Sound Video. Joining Cain on the shows were the full Gemini crew of Nick Stewart, Jason Grey, John Camarillo, and Josh Jenkins.
