UK - Audio equipment manufacturer Cambridge Audio recently took the less than conventional step of opening a fully equipped music venue below their London HQ. Named Melomania, this unlicensed space is for private 'invitation only' events and can cater for up to 200 guests. With a fully equipped DJ booth and a stage for bands, the PA comprises a speaker line-array and amplifiers adapted from the high-spec consumer products that the company is more familiarly associated with. Melomania has already captured the attention and imagination of some influential music business hitters, none bigger than Warner Music, who chose the venue for the launch and first official listening session of David Bowie's unreleased 1974 album 'The Gouster'. UK – Situated in the heart of Manchester’s medieval quarter, Chetham’s School of Music is the largest specialist music school in the UK and the only one in the north of England. It is also home to Manchester’s newest world-class performance venue, the Stoller Hall, due to be inaugurated in April 2017. Designed by architects Stephenson Studio with acoustic design by Arup, Chetham’s turned to specialist consultants Theatre Projects to specify the sound and communications systems which were installed by Northern Light. The sound reinforcement system that best matched the brief and was in keeping with the acoustics of the room was an EM Acoustics HALO-C system supplemented by EMS-51s.

USA – The Gray Mare is a new pub in the trendy East Village neighbourhood of Manhattan that caters to the vibe and tastes – both gustatory and spirituous – of that neighbourhood’s young clientele. “It was formerly Demsey’s, a neighbourhood tavern that, after 24 years, had run its course,” explained Rich Trombitas, regional sales and product manager with A/V manufacturer’s rep firm Cardone, Solomon & Associates (CS&A). “It’s the same owner, and he did a great job of ripping out the old and building in the new. The remodelling of an under used quadrangle situated around previously isolated wings of the College Building has completely changed the face of the Hendon Campus and has transformed the space by means of a strikingly modern and innovative glass roof. Part of a phased £14 million master plan, this newly created area is used throughout the year for a number of special events and presentations.

USA – The design of University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, is singular in an already innovative universe of sports venues. Opened in August of 2006 with a retractable roof and the nation’s first fully-retractable natural grass-playing surface, the facility’s entire playing field is able to roll outside of the building via an opening on one side of the stadium.
In keeping with the organisation’s long-standing commitment to elevating the fan experience, the Arizona Cardinals unveiled a new sound system in University of Phoenix Stadium for the start of the 2016 NFL season. Designed and specified by the Arizona Cardinals, the system consists primarily of flown L-Acoustics K2 arrays permanently installed in July by AV systems integrator Pro Sound & Video.

The contest was very close this year, with Webster University’s team The Fauxtons ultimately winning the competition on Friday, 21st October. The Fauxtons team of Josh Murphy, Natali Arco and Jon Ontiveros competed against The HOG Hushers from Carnegie Mellon University and Los Monos de Muerte from Southern Methodist University in the second annual contest. Iraq – The recently opened Karbala Olympic Stadium in Iraq is a 30,000-seat venue designed to host major sports, music, religious and youth events. Audio for the project was provided by Baghdad-based APCO Electronics, which provided acoustics design and participated in the actual installation as well. The company chose a sound system from Electro-Voice, creating a multi-zone digital audio system based around the IRIS-Net system control and supervising software and Electro-Voice EVH-1152 horn-loaded loudspeakers. The selected sound system stands for reliability, superior sound quality and scalability to future requirements. In addition, Electro-Voice amplifiers, microphones and wireless systems were also utilised.

The hotel was opened in 1906 and is therefore also celebrating its 110 year anniversary. To mark the occasion, Osram will illuminate the venerable hotel, whose past guests have already included celebrities like Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Taylor and the Rolling Stones, in a particularly spectacular fashion from 5th to 20th November. Following the video projection shown at the Patent Office in Berlin during the Festival of Light in October, this is the second lighting installation being presented by Osram for its brand anniversary.

Those involved in putting on the two-day celebration, however, also saw something beyond the free flowing party. Greece – Built between 1842 to 1862, Athens Metropolitan Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Archbishopric of Athens and all of Greece. This important landmark was severely damaged by earthquakes in 1981 and 1999. Several years of renovations, including structural support and maintenance of the decoration of the temple were completed in July 2016.

Molkom Folkhogskola Chooses Robe

Sweden – Molkom is a small, picturesque town near to Karlstad in Värmland beside a large lake and the Folkhogskola (Folk High School) there offers courses in acting, film, journalism and health in very green and pleasant surroundings. In 2012 a new 140 capacity multi-purpose venue was built specifically for the use of the acting and film courses, which also include modules related to the technology involved in the industries.
