Hawthorn Lights Up ‘the James Plays’
UK – Creative technical event production expert, Hawthorn, has been commissioned by the National Theatre of Scotland to supply lighting for the UK tour of its highly acclaimed production, The James Plays.
Hawthorn is supplying lighting from its extensive hire range to meet the specification of renowned theatre lighting designer, Philip Gladwell. This comes hot on the heels of Hawthorn’s appointment to supply lighting and video equipment for the touring production of Hairspray.
Following critical acclaim and box office success in 2014, The James Plays by Rona Munro, and directed by Laurie Sansom, will undertake a major UK and international tour in 2016, visiting 11 venues across England and Scotland, as well as performing at international festivals in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Hawthorn has supplied a variety of different fixtures, including Martin MAC Viper Performance, Martin MAC TW1, ETC Source Four Lustr+ 2, ETC D60 Lustr+, and Pea Soup Phantom Hazers.
Hawthorn also invested in Prolyte S36PRF pre-rig truss, to enable the complex production to get-in and get-out of each venue quickly and efficiently. The purchase of the equipment forms part of Hawthorn’s ongoing investment programme in new technology.
Philip Gladwell, lighting designer, said: “We have had a great time with Hawthorn supplying the lighting kit for The James Plays. Our team has been extremely well supported by Hawthorn and I know our production electricians, Paul Claydon and Marec Joyce, had fun prepping the equipment at Hawthorn’s warehouse.
“The 2016 tour for The James Plays opened at The Festival Theatre in Edinburgh in February and we have been incredibly impressed to have had so few faults with any of the equipment. It is a real testament to the quality of maintenance and care that Hawthorn clearly takes.”
Stephen Reid, Hawthorn account handler, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen to supply lighting for The James Plays; it’s an honour to be associated with such a highly acclaimed production. Hawthorn’s reputation for expertise in supplying hire equipment for theatre and concert touring productions continues to grow, and our commitment to providing an impeccable service is reflected in our ongoing investment in new equipment.”
The James Plays will be touring to Edinburgh, Inverness, Glasgow, Northampton, Salford, Newcastle, Sheffield, Norwich, Canterbury, Plymouth, Nottingham, Adelaide, Auckland and Toronto from 3rd February to 26th June 2016.
The 2014 productions originally co-produced with the Edinburgh International Festival and the National Theatre of Great Britain, opened at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh during the Edinburgh International Festival on 10th August, and then subsequently played at the Olivier Theatre, National Theatre, London, selling out both runs and playing to over 88,000 people. The plays went on to win the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best New Play and the Writers Guild Award for Best New Play (James I)
