USA – It’s show time for the new Writers Theatre building. After years of performing in temporary quarters – including a 60-seat venue in the back of a local bookstore – the 24-year-old theatre company now has a permanent home in downtown Glencoe, IL, designed by the award-winning Studio Gang Architects.

Inspired by the timber construction of classic English theatres like the Globe and the Rose, the new structure integrates traditional materials like wood, plaster and glass with a modern aesthetic and 21st century technology. Working in collaboration with SGA, Lightswitch Architectural designed the architectural lighting and controls for the entire complex, including the exterior, Litowitz Atrium, 250-seat Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Theatre, flexible 50- to 99-seat, black-box Gillian Theatre, the Green Family Rehearsal Room, circulation and public spaces, and back-of-house and support spaces.
