Hawthorn support Moonwalk for 16th year
UK – Thousands of women took to the streets of London and Edinburgh at night to take part in the Walk the Walk’s Moonwalk on 14th May and 11th June, and for the 16th year running, technical event production expert Hawthorn was there to provide production support.
The Moonwalk saw thousands of women – plus a few men – walk a full or half marathon, all in the name of raising funds to beat breast cancer. A total of 18,000 participants and guests came together at the sell-out fundraising challenge, which started at Clapham Common, London and Holyrood Park, Edinburgh.
Hawthorn provided all staging, site lighting, power and video distribution for the events, which this year saw charity Walk the Walk celebrate its 20th birthday. To mark the occasion, organisers decided on a carnival theme for the London event, encouraging participants to Salsa, Mambo and Calypso their way to the finish line. Tartan was the name of the game at Moonwalk Scotland, with walkers donning tartan baseball caps to accompany their decorated bras, adorned with all things Scottish.
The shocking pink Galaxy tent, provided by De Boer, was the central focus of the London event, providing 13,000 sqm of space. The area, which is the size of two football pitches, was set up by Hawthorn with stage structures, lighting and camera rigs as well as sound and video walls. In Edinburgh, a smaller structure was the starting point for walkers taking on a quarter, half, full or double marathon.
Over the course of the two events, Hawthorn provided eight articulated lorry loads of kit, including 26 lighting and sound consoles, 1,848 lights and over 6000 metres of cable.
The sites were also fitted up with comprehensive floodlighting infrastructures to create maximum visibility for walkers and guests, with various temporary lighting points being installed.
Rob Szabo, senior project manager at Hawthorn said: “This is the 16th year we have had the opportunity to work with the guys at Walk the Walk. It’s always a pleasure to be involved with the Moonwalk events, which make such a massive difference in the fight against breast cancer. We’re very proud to play a part in making this such a successful and memorable event.”
Nina Barough CBE, founder and chief executive of Walk the Walk said: “Over the past 16 years Walk the Walk has developed a very special relationship with Hawthorn. Not only have they always delivered the essential rig for the challenges but each year we challenge them with a different theme to interpret, and each year they rise to the challenge. Hawthorn have become as integral to a Moon Walk as the pink tent so long may it continue.”
