White Light Supplies Gilded Balloon at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
UK – The Gilded Balloon is one of Scotland’s leading entertainment venues and one of the four largest at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Producing a critically-acclaimed showcase of theatre, comedy and cabaret, the Gilded Balloon has an international reputation and this year promises to be its busiest yet. For the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, White Light has been called upon once again to provide the lighting throughout all of its 14 venues and across 160 different productions.
Danny Cunningham is head of lighting at the Gilded Balloon. He comments: “At the Gilded Balloon, we are constantly looking to push the boundaries with our programming. Whether its local or worldwide entertainment, the work we programme has to be to the highest standard possible. This needs to be reflected in every aspect of our venues, including the lighting.”
The brief for the Gilded Balloon was to provide a rig in each venue that would cover the needs of the various visiting companies and achieve their artistic vision while working within the confines of spaces that were not necessarily traditional entertainment venues.
Danny adds: “When choosing the rig this year, we wanted to ensure that we covered all bases. Therefore, we provided at the very minimum a two colour wash with front light. In venues that have more power options and space, we will add some intelligent fixtures such as i-Pix BB4 wash lights and Martin Professional MAC Vipers to ensure that each visiting company has the greatest number of options available.”
With the Gilded Balloon having played a significant role at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for more than thirty years, it is constantly looking for ways to upgrade its existing set-up, which entails drawing on WL’s unparalleled lighting inventory.
Danny comments: “This year we have made a conscious effort to update the lighting fixtures in our existing venues along with the five new venues we have recently acquired. We are utilising more of the Martin Professional MAC Vipers and have changed the desk in our flagship space to an ETC Eos. The reason behind the upgrade to an ETC Eos was to provide companies with a cue stack-friendly desk while having enough options to work for our ‘Late ‘n’ Live’ show that runs every evening.”
Pre-rigging for the Gilded Balloon took place at WL’s Wimbledon base. This was then taken up to Edinburgh a week prior to the Fringe Festival opening where WL’s senior hire co-ordinator Dan Last and WL’s senior video technician Luke Hance oversaw the lighting set-up in each venue.
Danny adds: “WL was an absolute pleasure to work with. They went above and beyond what was expected and helped us ensure that each venue was up and running in time for the festival. We are extremely grateful for their support throughout.”
