Hog User JoJo Tillmann Wins German Stage Award for Milky Chance Tour
Germany – Having recently converted to the Hog 4 console platform, lighting designer JoJo Tillmann is receiving a 2018 Opus Stage Award from the Professional Lighting + Sound Association of Germany as production designer/lighting designer of Milky Chance’s The Blossom Tour. The Opus honours exceptional achievement in theatre and stage production, with a ceremony taking place 12 April 2018 as part of the Prolight + Sound trade show in Frankfurt.
Tillmann wanted a small, flexible, and lightweight system to run Milky Chance’s world tour, so he created his own solution by mixing and matching High End Systems Hog 4 products.
“For all those years I used other consoles, and now that I’ve switched, I win an award?” Tillmann says with a laugh.
The German LD started using the Hog 4 console with the Milky Chance tour in 2016. But the full-size Hog 4 was too big for the festivals’ cramped FOH space. “I wanted to craft a highly compact, flexible control system, on wheels and in minimum space and with less weight. I wanted the easiest and fastest way to create my shows. I wanted a console with real-world coordinates and one that could handle lighting fixture attribute offsets.”
Hog 4 could handle it all, so Tillmann created his system using two Rack Hogs and a Nano Hog 4. He also purchased his own touch screen and created a custom road case for his Nano Hog and screen, because it had to be below 32kg for air freight. But his touch screens were originally not supported by HES then.
Reaching out to High End Systems for a solution, HES’ Jonathan Kemble came up with software to support this touch screen just for Tillmann. “JoJo came up with a unique way to package individual pieces to build what he needed,” Kemble explains. “Our console range is so flexible, and so we gave him the support he needed to ensure it worked for him. We’re so happy to hear of his lighting award!”
Tillmann says switching to the Hog 4 has answered his needs on the road for this tour. “The Fixture Offset feature on the Hog is fantastic and lets me do my daily editing very fast on tour. The Hog 4’s Change Fixture Feature is another reason I picked the Hog, especially for the festival shows. I wanted to have the least amount of stress as possible. So now I have plenty of options.”
He adds: “The Hog console is an instrument of light for me; the Hog OS and user interface suits my design style more than other consoles. With Hog, I experience more joy in programming and operating.”
The band performed 160 shows last year and continues the tour in South America in April. “For a German band, that is amazing,” he notes!
The Opus has been given for outstanding stage projects during Prolight + Sound since 2002. A jury of experts from the industry, associations and trade publications, as well as representatives of Messe Frankfurt, honours new, exceptional approaches to the creative use of technology.
