It was opened in 1873 as a grand Victorian public gesture: ‘the people's Palace’. Since then, the complex story of the building, affectionately known as ‘Ally Pally’, has been marked by fires, restoration, substantial war-time damage, charitable rescue, and many political sagas. In December, after 80 years of slumber and two years of careful restoration, Alexandra Palace Theatre has opened again following several years of careful restoration. As part of the process, a complete technical infrastructure had to be installed, including a substantial L-Acoustics Kara PA system that brings a fitting quality of sound to the beautifully restored space.

Nearly 100m of RoscoLED Tape was integrated inside a moving hexagonal structure overhead and was used to illuminate the 'MONKEYS' lettering on the top of the stage. The ability to control the light intensity and colour temperature via DMX was appealing to lighting designer Paul Normandale. He also found that its thicker copper base (compared to most other LED ribbon products) minimised potential for damage to the electronic circuits during handling and installation, truly allowing it to live up to the vigorous environments of rock & roll touring.
