Bandit Lites Hits the Beach with Hangout Festival
USA – Bandit Lites kicked off festival season illuminating the Hangout Music Festival, a three-day event hailed as a music vacation along Alabama’s white, sandy beaches. Now in its tenth year, Hangout’s line up included Travis Scott, The Lumineers, Cardi B, Kygo, Khalid, Vampire Weekend, Hozier and The Weeknd. Attendees were also treated to a surprise performance from long time Bandit client Jimmy Buffett.
For the festival’s main stage, Bandit supplied nearly 200 fixtures, including HES Solaframe 3000 fixtures, Claypaky Mythos 2, Claypaky B-EYE K20, Claypaky Sharpys, Elation SIXBAR 1000 IP, Elation CuePix WW2 Blinders along with four Lyican M2 long throw spots and two grandMA 2 Full consoles at the front of house.
Having lit the outdoor festival for five years running, Bandit Lites team provided a system that would withstand a weekend at the beach, even in inclement weather, although Bandit’s production manager Dizzy Gosnell happily pointed out it was a weekend of sunshine.
“The weather played ball with us all through the weekend; our OTC weather protection on the exposed trusses on the mainstage didn’t even get a try-out, and the fact more manufacturers are coming out with a greater range of IP rated fixtures really gave us a lot more options for outdoor shows without resorting to bubbles, domes and mushrooms,” said Gosnell.
Taking inspiration from both the setting and the name, Gosnell evoked waves on the Surf Stage with an eye-catching design that popped in both the day light and evening, utilising new High End Solaframe 3000, Claypaky B-EYE K20 fixtures, Robe Robin Pointes, Elation WW2, the trusty Atomic 3k and ColorDash 12 units to outline the top of the 'waves'.
“With the stages mere feet away from the 80-degree waters of the Gulf, having a lighting system celebrate that seemed the right choice,” Gosnell said.
Bandit also provided festival support for the sets of Travis Scott, The 1975, Kygo and Vampire Weekend.
Additional support came from Bandit Project Manager Gene Brian, masterminding the preps for both stages’ systems with an onsite crew of Andy French, Steve Comer, Jonathan ‘Kooz’ Cousineau, Erich Hudgens, Alexandra Gagnon, Vanessa Tuttoilmondo, Scott Sepe and Chase Strickland.
“Hadden Hippsley’s Lambda Productions team of Joe Gordon, John Monroe and Kat Harris make everything run so smoothly onsite,” finished Gosnell. “It was a success all around.”
