Stars Turn Out for TEC Awards

Dozens of leading figures from the music and sound industries will grace the stage at the 20th Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, to be held at the San Francisco Marriott on Saturday, 30th October. The charity event will be hosted by actor and comedian Harry Shearer, and is expected to draw close to 700 audio industry professionals.

   Filmmaker extraordinaire George Lucas will be inducted into the TEC Hall of Fame by his friend and longtime associate, sound designer Walter Murch, and renowned engineer/producer Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Toto, Eagles, Aerosmith), will be inducted by Steely Dan guitarist and composer Walter Becker. Platinum producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis will be presented with the Les Paul Award by Henry Juskiewicz, ceo of Gibson Guitar Corp., and a "surprize" presenter to be announced soon. The Les Paul Award is given to artists and others whose body of work exemplifies the creative application of audio technology.

   Numerous artists, producers, engineers and audio pros are lined up to present awards in 23 categories of technical and creative achievement, including famed producer/engineer Phil Ramone (Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles), former Talking Heads member and producer Jerry Harrison (No Doubt, Fine Young Cannibals, Violent Femmes), legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews (Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins), Asleep at the Wheel guitarist and engineer/producer, Ray Benson (George Strait, Dwight Yoakum, The Mavericks) and engineer/producer and technologist George Massenburg (Carly Simon, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt); as well as Fantasy Studios manager Nina Bombardier, Plant Studios ceo Arne Frager and The Village's Jeff Greenberg, current president of SPARS.
