3G Goes Live With L-Acoustics Rig

Established in July of this year, 3G Live may still be a relatively unfamiliar name on the sound reinforcement company scene in Southern California. But thanks, in part, to the recent purchase of a massive turnkey L-Acoustics loudspeaker system, which includes the first two dozen 115XT HiQ floor monitors sold in North America, the company aims to quickly change that.

At the helm of 3G Live is vice president Jay Curiel, a 15-year veteran of the Orange County and Los Angeles concert production scenes. Curiel is notably accompanied in his new venture by both lead sound engineer Julio Valdez and president Eli Stearns, who also heads up 3G Productions, 3G Live's parent company in Chicago.

With regard to product, the touring company has now taken delivery of 24 V-DOSC and 12 dV-DOSC loudspeaker systems, 16 SB218 and 4 dV-SUB subwoofer enclosures, 24 new 115XT HiQ floor monitors, and a full complement of L-Acoustics power amplifiers (13 racks worth), patching systems, and rigging hardware. It should be noted that this entire system was delivered, fully functioning, to 3G Live in exactly two weeks from signing the purchase order.

"I've been working with concert rigs for a decade and a half and have never heard a system sound like this," says Curiel. "I've owned other well-known loudspeaker setups in the past - even other line array systems - but V-DOSC is simply on a totally different level. Nothing else on the market can compare with it. And the same goes for dV-DOSC, which is equally amazing. It sounds so huge for such a small enclosure that almost looks like a toy. I don't know what Dr. Heil does in his laboratory, but he designs some truly incredible products. Julio and I are absolutely amazed with the whole rig."

As for the new floor monitors, Curiel similarly has nothing but praise to bestow. "Although I knew from the start what PA we wanted to use, I was unsure of what route to take with our wedges," he recalls. "We had initially seriously considered several boutique wedges built by other touring sound companies. However, when Paul Freudenberg at L-Acoustics US demoed the new 115XT HiQ for me, I was stunned by its clarity and punch, so we bought two dozen with our rig. We've found that they require almost no tweaking to sound great and every engineer and musician that has used them so far has absolutely loved them."

Since acquiring its new loudspeakers, the SR company has kept everything in steady use on numerous large-scale corporate events--including concerts at Santa Anita Race Track and Marlboro Red Racing Schools--as well national tours for popular Latin acts like Pancho Sanchez, Alajandro Fernandez, Joan Sebastian and Marco Antonio Solis.

And despite being around for only a few months so far, business has already boomed to the point that 3G Live is now in the process of expanding its system. "Our whole rig is booked up through the end of the year, so I'm ordering some additional boxes. Our second order will add more dV-DOSC, SB218s, amplifiers, and at least a dozen extra wedges because they're working out so well for us," notes Curiel.
