PRG Synergy at Work at Volvo Hearst Castle Challenge

PRG Synergy at Work at Volvo Hearst Castle Challenge

David Hoover, general manager of PRG's Orlando audio operations and a 16-year volunteer at Best Buddies, served as technical director. Dave coordinated the delivery of PRG's equipment and technical support for the bike race and an exclusive post-ride celebration and concert at the Hearst Ranch.

"One challenge for us was the time constraints. Another was the difficulty of placing audio equipment along the Pacific Coast Highway where we had to deal with wind, fog, mud and rain," said Brian Larson, crew chief of the starting lines and remote audio stations.

"Everything went off without a hitch because we had a talented crew working around the clock. That crew included FOH crew chief Adam Loesch, MON tech Rusty Gage, stage tech Edwin Jones, stage manager Bill Daly, system tech Mark Miller and A2 Mark Herron."

PRG's Las Vegas audio operation provided IR racks consisting of a small 16-channel mixer, Shure U4D handheld units and Meyer UPA-1P self powered speakers on Ultimate stands which were set up at the initial starting line, the 30-mile start and the 15-mile start. OpAmp press bridges were used for media feeds and interviews. At the post-ride concert headlined by Sugar Ray, the main stage had a complete L-Acoustics line array comprised of 18 DV-DOSC speakers, 6 DVSUBs, and 8 SB218s in a four way configuration flown from a Stage Line 250 mobile stage. Four ARCS were used as fill. The configuration was powered by L'Acoustics LA48 Amplifiers. Midas was the console of choice with a Heritage 3000 at FOH and an XL250 for monitoring.

Peter Alexander, of PRG Lighting, created the lighting design at the barbeque and Hearst Ranch concert site. PRG's lighting package included six 10° Source 4 Lekos, six 19° Source 4 Lekos, 16 Source 4 Pars, 12 Par 64 Bars, four ACL Bars, three Par 8 Lites, 24 Single Cell Cycs, three 48x2.4K sensor racks, eight Studio Spot fixtures, three Lycian 1271s, two DF 50 foggers, two half-ton chain motors, four one-ton chain motors, and a Whole Hog II control console.

"This project was a great example of how well our divisions work together," commented Bill Daly. "Our lighting and audio teams worked closely together in planning all aspects of the project."

"Our equipment was strung out over one hundred miles from start to finish, so it wasn't an easy gig," Daly added. "Given the logistical challenges of moving people and equipment between the many stations along the course, I'm delighted with how smoothly the event went."
