Sex, Politics and . . . Home Improvement!
The Lightswitch crew is wrapping up 2004 with an eclectic mix of projects and the breadth of the offering highlights company’s considerable capabilities.
Lightswitch San Francisco was at the lighting helm of the Apple iPod Product Launch, featuring Bono and The Edge with a premier performance of songs from the new U2 CD, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Although it wasn’t released until November 23, anyone with a television already knows the chorus to the cut Vertigo, due to heavy Apple commercial rotation. Lightswitch handled the launch in the California Theatre in San Jose, along with the Press and “Hands on Exhibit” areas.
San Francisco’s Norm Schwab also lit the Opposite of Sex at The Magic Theatre in San Francisco. This project, which was co-produced by Barry and Fran Weisler and The Magic, is in consideration for a Broadway run. Schwab and his team also lit the Home Depot 25th Anniversary in Orlando and the Kia Motor Dealer’s Meeting and Car Salon in Las Vegas.
Lightswitch New York lit Copley Square in Boston for the Kerry/Edwards’ campaign. In anticipation of a celebratory event on 2nd November, lighting on the center stage was supplemented with illumination on the buildings around the plaza and large-format projection on the side of the Boston Public Library. Shortly before, New York’s Howard Werner acted as lighting designer for the Audi Dealer Meeting in Munich, Germany.
Los Angeles-based Chris Medvitz just completed the design for Lionel Richie’s “One World” tour in Europe, which coincides with his newest release, Just for You. The tour was extended with additional dates in Germany due to overwhelming demand. Medvitz also just wrapped up lighting for the Final Night Dinner at the Lexus Dealer Meeting in Washington DC.
Lightswitch’s Chicago arm, under the leadership of John Featherstone, had an equally busy fall. Projects included the Ryder Cup Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, the Honda US Dealer Meeting in Orlando and the Accenture Partners Meeting in St. Charles, Illinois. For the ninth consecutive year, the team lit the Ronald McDonald House Awards of Excellence Gala in Chicago and for the fifth year provided the design for the Genlyte/ Vari-Lite booth at ETS-LDI in Las Vegas.
On the architectural front, Lightswitch Chicago is just completing the Wildfire Grill in Glenview, Illinois and Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab restaurant in Las Vegas.
So, what’s on the Boards for the busy Lightswitch team? Just after Thanksgiving, Lightswitch New York will light the Georgia Pacific National Sales Meeting in Orlando. And right after the Christmas holidays, its auto show season again! So look for all of the Lightswitch offices to collaborate on Nissan press events and stand lighting, as well as all DaimlerChrysler exhibits and presentations. The Detroit Auto Show kicks off in Detroit in January. Also, Lightswitch Chicago lights the K-8 School in Bollingbrook, Illinois and the redesign of the Chicago Children's Museum.
