D-MEXX Range-X Starts Shipping

German/Czech audio development joint venture D-MEXX has started to ship the first product implementation of their ‘Range-X’ interface technology, which provides an advantageous solution, in many respects, for distributing large numbers of audio channels between digital mixing consoles and the stage, recording units, outboard FX, etc, or between converters, in live and studio setups, as well as in fixed installations.

The standard version of Range-X (now shipping) distributes up to 16 audio channels (max. 8 per direction and AES/EBU or microphone cable) over distances up to 70m. The upcoming 'Pro' version will even handle up to 32 ch. (max. 16 per direction), plus bidirectional MIDI control data over distances of more than 100m on a single CAT-5 cable. Range-X operates latency-free, and is EMV- and hum-resistant. Since connections to other equipment on both ends are ADAT-based, Range-X supports 24-bit 48 or 96Khz audio, the latter though reducing the maximum number of channels by half.

Besides safe delivery of audio over large distances, another key advantage of Range-X is its cost-efficiency. Compared to analog cabling, Range-X offers greatly reduced weight and easier handling, and is itself fairly moderately priced. Especially in fixed installations, it can minimize planning, and reduce the cost of enhancing existing audio distribution capacities significantly, by multiplying transmission capacities of existing cabling.
