Turner Studios Adds Fifth Studer D950

Turner Studios has reported that it has installed a 96-input Studer D950 M2 Digital Mixing System into its first live surround sound production room, Control Room 24. This purchase notably marks the fifth D950 in Turner's current inventory of studio consoles.
According to Jay Yeary, engineering audio manager for Turner Studios, the console was commissioned in mid-May, just in time for use on the NBA Western Conference Finals. Aside from being primarily employed to mix surround audio for Turner Sports broadcasts, including upcoming Atlanta Braves baseball games, NASCAR races, and more NBA tournaments in the fall, the D950 M2 is also likely to be used on a variety of franchise shows, such as Dinner & a Movie, Movie & a Makeover, and Southern Living Presents, as well as on shoots for Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
"Digital television and surround sound systems are truly emerging," says Yeary. “TBS is on the air as a digital broadcast in Atlanta and TNT is now on the air as a high-definition network. The Studer D950 M2 is very much a part of Turner Network Television's HD initiative."
Turner Studios purchased its initial complement of Studer D950 desks when it relocated to its present facility back in September 1999. “We were actually using a D940 prior to the move," Yeary notes, "and had been impressed enough with the specifications of the D950 to buy four of them at once – two for our audio post rooms and two for our live audio studios.
"When it came time to equipping our new live surround sound production room with a console, the Mark 2 version of the D950 best suited our needs for several reasons. First, like the others, the desk sounds great and we knew it would be highly reliable. Having mixed on D950s for almost five years now, our operators were also very familiar with the layout and functionality, eliminating the need for training. Furthermore, the console was immediately available, which was appreciated as we were under tight time constraints to get it up and running for the NBA playoffs. As we anticipated, our newest Studer desk fits our audio engineering needs and we're very pleased with it."
