Showlight 2005 Announces First Speakers

Three years ago, as Showlight 2001 drew to a close in Edinburgh, members of the organising committee were left wondering how they were going to match such a magical few days. As news breaks of the speakers promised for Showlight 2005, it would seem they had little to worry about. The international names so far include at least three award-winning lighting designers and speakers from Holland, Germany, Australia, North America, Austria and, of course, the UK.

In a slight change of format, Showlight 2005 will feature several discussion groups: lighting education will be reviewed by a panel of students, lecturers and employers under the eagle eye of England’s Ian Dow; developments in light sources affecting lighting designers will be discussed by a small panel of senior engineers from the international lamp industry; and discussion between international lighting designers will be chaired by the inimitable Mark Jonathan, previously with the UK’s National Theatre.

Showlight 2005 retains the model of keynote speakers – those who are allowed to talk for a little longer – and these include American Ken Billington, who won the 1997 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for his lighting of Chicago; Durham Marenghi from the UK, who will review his wide range of commissions, from cruise liners to Golden Jubilees and Winter Olympics; and director of photography Roger Simonsz from Holland, who will look at colour, perception and reality in the context of film.

As if this stellar bunch was not enough, add the name Richard Pilbrow, internationally known author, stage lighting designer and winner of numerous awards. Richard will be interviewed on a lifetime of lighting by his colleague David Taylor. Both British, both live in the US, both work internationally: it could be a very interesting session.

Another award-winning speaker is Jerry Appelt of Germany, known for his work on event and concert lighting, who earlier this year received an Opus award for his lighting design for the Aida-Aula cruise ship launch.

Architectural lighting will be covered by Helmar Zangerl of the Lichtakademie Bartenbach in Austria, while lighting for television will be catered for by Mike LeFevre, who will look at the technology and practice of combining virtual graphics and live action, particularly in sport, and Carol Sadler who will review operating and lighting with minimal budgets!

Showlight 2005 takes place at the Prinzregententheater, Munich, in association with the Prinzregententheater School, part of the Bayerische Theaterakademie, 21st-24th May 2005. To register as a delegate e-mail: mailto:register@showlight.org or visit http://www.showlight.org, where you can also keep up-to-date as more speakers are announced.
