Velvet Thunder Claps with Aztec in US
Rental company Velvet Thunder owners Steve Ehrlich and Bill Walker have put their new Audient Aztec through its paces this summer, providing the sound at a number of gigs in the US.
After kicking off as FOH at the High Sierra Music Festival (Quincy, Ca.) the Aztec live performance console further proved its worth as the monitor console for the opening band at the annual String Cheese Incident Festival, (North Plains, Or.), monitors for heavy rock show Off-fest, (Bend, Or.) as well as the local Eugene Celebration. This autumn and winter it is performing resident monitor duties at the McDonald Theatre (Eugene, Or.).
“Aztec has had a busy summer,” confirms engineer and co-owner Bill Walker, who is very happy with the purchase. “I really enjoy Aztec, I think the pre-amps are outstanding and the EQ is full-function and very musical sounding; both are far superior to most of what is out there.” Ehrlich and Walker first heard about the Audient Aztec installed in The 9:30 Club in Washington DC, the busiest club in the US.
“Being a touring sound company, Velvet Thunder needs to be able to move easily between many different venues,” says Chris Walsh, director of sales and marketing for Audient’s US distributor, AXI. “Hence the appeal of a console that is easily transportable, but still provides flexibility and audio excellence. Aztec’s innovative rugged lightweight frame structure coupled with class-leading audio performance provided exactly the solution they were looking for.”
“We’re able to use it on monitor shows for up to 12 mixes and as a front of house desk,” says Steve Ehrlich who used it as a FOH console. “It’s an excellent console and so easy to set up! It doesn’t take more than two guys to set it up and run it. We do a lot of shows where we are teamed up with really big national sound companies that do tour work, so the Audient really helps us out and saves us time.”
Walker admits to having become a big fan. “We are using the Aztec together with Audient ASP231 Graphic EQs – we have 12 channels in total – and I love the sound of them. We have also got the Audient ONE Loud Speaker Processor for evaluation.
“I love the Aztec and hope to be able to use it more next year as it was intended: doing FOH mixes,” concludes Walker.
