PRG Solves Grammy Challenges with Virtuoso Technology

"Lighting and video were much more integrated this year," Barnhart stated. "During pre-production, communication with the video team on color palettes and cues for each performance was much better than in the past, contributing to a more coordinated look when we went live."

PRG's Virtuoso VX consoles were put to the test when Dickinson and Barnhart decided to add 30 Color Blaze 72 units at the last minute. A profile for these units did not exist on the consoles, so PRG quickly created one using the Virtuoso's unique effects programming panel.This allowed console operators Andy O'Reilly and Matt Firestone to integrate the LEDs effortlessly into the show.

"We rely on Andy and Matt to turn our design concepts into reality," Barnhart commented. "So we were very delighted the Virtuosos enabled them to respond so quickly to our changes."

PRG also installed a Virtuoso fiber optic communications network between the show's conventional lighting fixtures and the Obsession II consoles controlling them. Use of the fiber optic technology in place of Category 5 network cabling significantly reduced the potential risks of a network crash or signal loss while transmitting DMX and Ethernet protocols over long distances.

The fiber optic solution was requested by Gil Samuelian, an Obsession programmer/operator who has worked on previous GRAMMY Award shows. PRG's solution helped overcome the 300 foot limitations of standard Cat-5 cabling. It also reduced the equipment required mid-stream between the booster device, the control console and the first dimmer rack position.

PRG's Virtuoso fiber optic communication technology can be used with any lighting control console that communicates in Ethernet protocol.
