VDC Helps Fisher Marine Upgrade Two Thomson Cruise Ships

Fisher Marine, a UK company with 25 years experience of installing audio and video equipment on board ships, has recently completed a major overhaul of two Thomson cruise ships, Destiny and Celebration.

The six-month project involved the complete transformation of nightclubs, casinos, lounges, piano bars, restaurants and deck systems on board both ships. New sound, lighting and video equipment was installed throughout as each area was re-designed to bring it up to the latest technical and esoteric standards.

For a project of this magnitude, Fisher Marine, in conjunction with audio specialists Delta Sound, installed literally thousands of meters of cable – all of which was supplied by UK-based cable company VDC Trading.

“These are big ships,” says Fisher Marine’s head Ken Fisher, “so there was certainly a lot of cable involved. We wanted to use the best and most reliable products on the market, which is why we turned to VDC. I’ve used VDC for many years because I know their products are tough enough to withstand heavy use and because they always supply exactly what I need. Even when we ask for something that they don’t stock as standard, we know they will be able to source it for us.”

VDC Trading is rapidly becoming an expert in marine cabling solutions thanks to its Van Damme Ecoflex range of Low Smoke Zero Halogen cables that provide installers with the highest quality audio, video and data cables for environments where low hazard cable infrastructure is required. Ship-board power and telecommunications cables face particularly stringent safety requirements and must comply with part 359 of the IEC 60092 directive relating to the sheathing used, so that they don’t become a fire hazard.

Among the products supplied to Fisher Marine were over 5,000 meters of Cat 5 data cable and 800 meters of Defence Standard data cable, both of which are used for live data transfer; 200 meters of Firesafe cable, which is specially designed to comply with tough marine fire safety requirements; 400 meters of Classic Van Damme microphone cable; 300 meters of unbalanced patch cable for equipment patchbays; 200 meters of Classic 1-pair cable and 100 meters of Van Damme studio grade 4-pair Blue Series cable, which is used in sound systems to link up outboard equipment such as limiters and compressors.

Destiny and Celebration are now back in service and will spend the summer cruising the Mediterranean, Atlantic and North Sea. Both vessels carry up to 1,400 passengers, all of whom can expect to enjoy their cruising experience to the full thanks to the high quality of the entertainment areas and systems Fisher Marine and Delta Sound have installed on-board.
