Carnival Liberty Joins the Fleet

Carnival’s newest entry, Liberty, inaugurated the line’s Mediterranean cruise program in mid-July. Once again, Nautilus Entertainment Design Inc. (NED) provided design, project management and system commissioning for the entertainment and architectural lighting systems. The team also project-managed the design and installation of a new entertainment center featuring a 270-square-foot video wall poolside on the Lido deck, which has been named the ‘Seaside Theatre’.

The LED screen modules were provided by Barco and installed into a custom space frame structure designed by architect Joe Farcus. The video wall will be used for multiple purposes, at times showing movies, sporting events, concerts and the ship’s own ‘Morning Show’. It is even used to show real-time events, such as the Liberty departing or entering port and live performances occurring on the Lido Deck stage just below the screen. Since Carnival’s fleet are known as ‘Fun Ships’, it’s fitting that Play Station 2 devices can be connected to provide unique and much larger-than-life entertainment for children of all ages.

NED’s Jim Tetlow commented: “The Seaside Theatre represented a unique challenge, as we had to design and integrate a performance stage, lighting system, audio system, and of course the LED video wall. All of this had to be fit into the space and power available and be configured within the weight constraints on one of the top decks of the vessel. We are pleased to have brought this project in on schedule and under budget.“

The Lido Deck stage and the giant video wall are supported by a 70,000-watt concert-quality sound reinforcement system. Great care was taken in the design and installation of the sound system to assure that guests in the cabins just below would not be disturbed even with a midnight rock concert underway on deck.

The “Seaside Theatre” is accompanied by other entertainment venues, including the Venetian Palace Theatre, Toulouse-Lautrec Lounge and a dozen other bars and lounges. The Carnival Liberty is the seventh of the company’s Super-liners, which were inaugurated with Carnival Destiny in 1996. She’ll be joined by the Carnival Freedom in 2007.

NED’s project management team was led by Mike Lindauer, audio system design by Alan Edwards, and the onsite NED project team was headed by Matt Howes.
