Strong Entertainment Lighting Powers the Future

Science fiction becomes science reality this fall and Strong Entertainment Lighting will ‘Power the Future’. Strong’s 10,000-watt Britelight Super 10 will be the energy source powering several competing space elevator climbers up a crane-suspended vertical ribbon. The Elevator:2010 Climber Competition, being held in Mountain View, CA., Sept.

30 - Oct. 2, challenges teams from all over the world to design and build a space elevator climber prototype.

“With a 75-year heritage of success, we’re looking to the future. We have been lighting NASA’s Space Shuttle launch pad for more than five years and now we have the opportunity to light a new way to the stars,” said Paul Rabinovitz, Strong vice president. “Because space elevators were once considered science fiction, Elevator:2010 is truly a revolutionary effort and we are excited to be the lighting source that powers the competition.”

For this competition, the Strong 10,000-watt Britelight Super 10 was selected to serve as a constant power source for the climbers. Each team will design and build a climber prototype to ascend the vertical ribbon carrying a payload. Each team’s climber is rated on speed and amount of payload.

Strong Entertainment Lighting is a co-sponsor of the event along side Gizmonics, Inc., Carbon Designs, Inc. and others. NASA's Centennial Challenge program is providing the $400,000 prize purse for the competitions in 2005-2006, with a $50,000 first prize awarded to this year's winner.

A concept first proposed in the 1960s by Russian engineer Yuri Artsutanov, a space elevator consisted of a thin, vertical ribbon extending from anchors on earth to space and self-powered climbers. The ribbon is kept taut by the rotation of the earth. Climbers are electric vehicles that ascend the ribbon using electricity from solar panels.
