Bandit Helps Barry Manilow Spread Music and Passion
Three decades into his career, legendary pop singer Barry Manilow is still impressing audiences with new music and powerful performances. A regular act at the Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada, Manilow is adding several tour dates to his schedule through January of 2007, and Bandit Lites is working with lighting designer Seth Jackson, to provide lighting for the tour.
With the size and scope of this production, and the large video element, Seth Jackson went for fixtures that had as much power as he could get. For the hardedge fixtures, he went with a combination of VL2500s and Martin MAC 2k Performances. For the 2ks, he added in the Patrick Woodroffe Gobo package to give some new variety to the light, which Jackson says made a world of difference. Jackson also used Syncrolite B-52s along with MAC 300s and MAC2ks.
Especially over the last three years, Manilow’s productions have become increasingly large. Jackson said a challenging component was matching the production values of the touring show to that of the Las Vegas show, while still allowing it to move from city to city. The show is packed with video-including an upstage LED wall that is 30 feet wide, and then another 40 feet of Low-Res panels (built by Screenworks). It became essential to match the video with a lot of lighting, in order to cut through a backdrop that produces a fair amount of light on its own.
Since the Barry Manilow show is an enormous production and Jackson had limited time to program, he used Morris Leasing’s ESP Vision Studio in Nashville to pre-program the show.
“The ESP system is fantastic,” Jackson commented. “It really gives you a natural feel for what the lights are going to do in reality and allowed me to program in the daytime without distractions.”
Bandit vice president Michael Golden added: “Barry Manilow is one of the true legends of music today and we are most honored to be working with the talent of both Mr. Manilow and Seth Jackson on this incredible project.”
