grandMA and Motocross in the Bullfighting Arena

More than 42,000 enthusiastic motocross fans came together at Mexico City’s biggest bullfighting arena Plaza de Toros to watch stunning performances of freestyle motocross cyclists at the Red Bull X-Fighters event. This exciting competition was broadcast live on Mexican television and also to Guatemala and Venezuela. Plaza de Toros turned into a spectacular racecourse and for the lighting design mo2’s Manfred ‘Ollie’ Olma again made good use of grandMA multimedia consoles.

Ollie created a massive lighting system with more than 100 moving lights – including a total of 40 Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200s – and 320 conventional fixtures, as well as a complex architectural lighting with LED RGB colour changers, four kW Xenon and 2.5 kW HTI fixtures. To control the whole lighting system he used a grandMA full-size and a grandMA light as back up.

Programmer Manuel Da Costa trusted grandMA’s capabilities, so even a tight schedule on site was little to worry about. They gained access to the full lighting system only one day before the show went live on air, so they had less time for programming the show under real conditions. “More or less we did ‘blind programming’, Olma explained. “We keep most of our ideas in mind instead of really programming them. I made use of ten faders with essentials and Manuel had access to basic effects via ten other faders. It is easy to team up with Manuel and with the trustworthy grandMA multimedia consoles we can easily do a good live job under these conditions. We’d also like to thank Daniel F. Ridano (technical manager MA Lighting, Latin America) and Bruno Santaguida Aversa (Luzmila Iluminacion SA, Mexico) for taking great care of us and their great support.”

Luzmila Iluminacion SA, Mexico supplied the grandMA consoles for the Red Bull X-Fighters event.
