Solid State Logic Names Arnold Scher Product Manager
Solid State Logic has announced the hiring of Arnold Scher as product manager. Based out of SSL’s New York office, Arnold is primed to lead the successful introduction of the new MediaWAN platform, SSL’s expansion into digital video acquisition and storage technologies.
Arnold brings to SSL extensive experience in broadcast engineering and installation management. For the last six years, he served as installation manager/lead site engineer in the Networked Solutions Group of Avid/Pinnacle Systems. Arnold joined Pinnacle Systems upon its acquisition of Montage Group, Ltd., where he previously served as installation manager.
It was at Montage Group that Arnold first worked with Solid State Logic principal David Engelke, along with Jeff Stonier and Bala Iyer, now serving on the MediaWAN team as VP of Broadcast Engineering and Chief Systems Architect, respectively. David, Jeff and Bala later established Broadcast Devices LLC, which was merged into SSL this year to drive the latter’s development of cutting-edge video acquisition and storage solutions.
We’ve known each other for over 10 years,” Arnold says of his MediaWAN team mates. “Everyone at SSL is very entrepreneurial—this is not a lumbering, corporate environment. We’re making a product that encompasses comprehensive, fluid digital workflow and will revolutionize the way content is acquired, stored and managed.”
“With his extensive background in video production and post production, Arnold is a perfect addition to our team as SSL embarks on an historic expansion into video acquisition and storage technologies,” says Niall Feldman, director of product marketing. “Arnold’s prior work with David, Jeff and Bala laid the groundwork for an exceptional team that will guide us to the successful introduction of the MediaWAN platform.”
MediaWAN Gravity is a complete, scalable broadcast production system that utilizes proprietary software running on standard high-performance PCs and servers. Geared to the fast-moving, multi-format nature of today’s media operations, the software provides encoders to import video from a variety of sources including HD, a preview and job allocation interface for production co-ordinators, editing software for journalists and management tools for news producers. An asset management database and user interface also provide for seamless information lifecycle management in the video domain.
In addition, MediaWAN technology has also been developed to provide a highly cost-effective backhaul service. MediaWAN Backhaul allows media networks to install encoders at remote locations and automatically ingest video and audio content to central servers where it is immediately available for use. The system operates over a private MPLS network that provides a very high QoS and highly efficient use of the bandwidth enabling broadcast-resolution video to be delivered at a fraction of the cost of traditional satellite transmission. The system operates at very low latency, which significantly improves the performance of the circuit for remote interviews.
