Tony Award-winning Pajama Game Relies on Meyer Sound
Director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall’s Broadway revival of the 1950s classic play The Pajama Game has received a 2006 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, while Marshall herself won one for Best Choreography. The show received an impressive seven Tony nominations in all, including Best Direction of a Musical, and best performance nominations for leading actors Harry Connick, Jr. and Kelli O’Hara.
Meyer Sound’s Design Services Department played a key role in the show’s sound design, working with NYC-based sound designer Brian Ronan to create a system custom-tailored for the show. Ronan added an array of 15 M1D ultracompact curvilinear array loudspeakers to the American Airlines Theatre’s existing sound system, which included four UPA-1P compact wide coverage loudspeakers around the proscenium, 10 UPM-1P ultracompact wide coverage loudspeakers under the balcony, and a pair of USW-1P compact subwoofers.
“I wanted Pajama Game to have a very natural, unprocessed sound,” Ronan explains, “and I felt that the M1D array would provide transparent, efficient coverage.”
Meyer Sound design services manager Todd Meier assisted Ronan with configuring the M1D array. “Brian knew exactly what he wanted to hear, which really made our job easy,” Meier reports.
For Ronan, the decision to add to the existing Meyer Sound system was an easy one. “Meyer Sound makes quality products, I’m familiar with their sound and know exactly what to expect,” he states. “Besides that, the support the company shows to its Broadway clients is without parallel.”
