Martin in Dallas at Valley View Mall

With 180 stores and 15 restaurants, Valley View Mall in Dallas, Texas can keep a shopper pleasantly occupied for hours. Also known as Valley View Center, and having served the North Dallas community for over 25 years, one of the Mall’s major draws is the AMC Valley View 16 Theaters.

Basically a large box building, Mall developer Westcor looked to architectural and themed lighting designers Illuminating Concepts for ideas on how to increase the visual attraction of the multi screen theater.

“The building has a long range visibility and can be seen from the main expressway,” explains Illuminating Concept’s Kenneth Klemmer, Director of Design on the project. “Originally they were looking at a white light illuminated theater exterior but eventually decided on a concept to illuminate the building in color with color sequences, yet still provide the requisite amount of emergency white light.”

Approximately 40 IP65 rated Exterior 200 color changers from Martin Architectural were integrated into the theater’s perimeter balcony handrail to provide virtually unlimited color choices for the roughly 30 foot high façade walls. The programmable 150W fixtures are mounted on vertical supports and elevated 7 feet above the walkway surface that also carries power and data. A custom sconce applied to the building gives shafts of white uplight as well as egress and white light onto an exit balcony that runs around the theater.

Housed in a beautifully designed weatherproof casing, the Exterior 200’s asymmetrical wide throw flood beam makes it perfect for applications where projection distance is limited. The AMC Theater’s dynamic lighting scheme was programmed on a Hog PC with fader wing and uploaded to an ELC showSTORE playback controller.
