grandMA Celebrated New Year’s Eve on Ipanema Beach

The party was gigantic. Five Cities - New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Berlin and Rio de Janeiro – took part in the Nokia New Year’s Eve. All over the world music fans were celebrating the countdown to 2007. An estimated 1.3 million people attended the live shows and 150 million watched the event on TV or internet. Operator and programmer Carioca used one grandMA full-size and one grandMA ultra-light with an NSP to build the grandMA 3D plot, to light the party in Rio at Posto 8 in Ipanema.

The grandMA consoles were integrated into a multi-user session. This concept was new to the Brazilian technicians. “The people were really surprised and constantly asked, which console controls which part of the lighting plot?” reports Daniel Ridano of MA Lighting Latinoamérica, who took care of the personalised support to the customers. “The answer was simple: They are able to control anything from any of the consoles in the network.” Valmor Neves CEO of Zuluz commented: "We used MA technology, firstly because it was a choice of David Hill, the LD of the event. The second reason was the ease of programming, operating and design functions. I think that in the near future the grandMA should be the most popular console in the world and I hope to have my own as soon as possible."

Eighty MAC moving lights, 288 Par 64s, 16 8-light Molefays and 14 Atomic Strobes formed just part of the lighting rig on Ipanema sands. Valmor Neves was responsible for the lighting at the Rio stage and Companhia Da Luz provided the lighting equipment.

The line-up included artists like John Legend, Sergio Mendes, DJ Nado Leal, Funk ‘n a lata and DJ Marlboro. It was designed to create a festive climate and to promote a cultural interchange between Brazilians and people from other countries participating in the Nokia News Year’s Eve. Via video or SMS messages, which were displayed on video screens at the different locations, people could show their worldwide connection.
