Digital Projection International Introduces Range of 2K Resolution All Digital Active 3D Projection Systems

Digital Projection International (DPI), an Emmy Award-winning manufacturer of high-performance projection systems has recently installed its new active digital stereo system in Denmark and Hungary. Whilst the technology and concept of active 3D imagery is well known, until recently the system has been based on a very expensive server playback and storage system. If this is not an option then the signal format has been traditionally analogue with a very significant fall off in image reproduction and quality.

With the introduction of DPI’s Lightning HD-T 3 chip DLP based projection system using dual DVI input and 2048X1080 resolution, the state of the art in stereo image quality and colour is now instantly available. This brings with it the advantage that it can be used with a basic PC playback and storage system, bringing a huge increase in performance at a significant reduction in cost.

The Lightning HD-T pro series offers the highest lumen per watt efficiency ranging from 15,000 lumens upwards. This range by the end of 2007 will top 30,000 lumens from the same sub 100kgs chassis making this the smallest and lightest DLP projector in the market with this level of output. The units accept 12 bits per colour and these 12-bit sources are pixel mapped to the DMD via de-gamma processing with an output grey scale resolution of 16 bits per colour. With the 144 Hz refresh rate it offers a 3D active image on screen which is flicker free with more than 280 trillion colours. The twin-dual DVI input capability of the Lightning HD-T pro series positions it as the highest colour–depth projector on the market today. The second world leading feature from this pro series HD-T chassis.

Adding DPI’s market leading DLP projector know-how to their application solution capability, they are now able to offer this performance from a low cost DVI output Windows based PC system. The unique sync port side panel on the projector means you can arrive at any venue, turn on your pc to play back the content and be up and running with huge 3D monsters jumping from the screen within a matter of minutes. The efficiency of the proprietary (Hyper Cooled) Lightning lamp module running from single phase power means that Lightning HD-T is a cost effective 3D solution for any venue worldwide without any adaptation.

The world’s first installation to take advantage of this technical progress in stereo imaging is the Tycho Brahe planetarium dome in Copenhagen, Denmark. Steen Krener-Iversen, vice president of Tycho Brahe, enthused: “We were up and running with superb 3D images within three hours after the opening of the box. That is unusual. Integration of the projector into our show automation system (Medialon) was also a snap - that is unusual as well. That was mainly due to good and easy-to-navigate menus. I did an informal presentation of the installation at the Giant Screen Cinema Conference in Vancouver recently, at the technical conference. I definitely think the system has an edge over other vendors.”
