Aspen Audio Captures History

The Aspen Music Festival and School is one of the largest and most prestigious classical music festivals in the country. A complement to the tradition of excellence in musicianship at the Music Festival is the Edgar Stanton Audio Recording Institute. The ESARI is a group of audio professionals dedicated to producing the highest quality recordings of these historic performances, as well as providing young audio engineers the opportunity to learn about classical recording in classroom and practical settings from some of the best classical engineers and audio educators in

the world.

The ESARI staff consists of eleven handpicked engineers who spend the entire

summer recording and providing reinforcement support to over 250 events at more than six venues over the nine-week festival. Every year the engineers are chosen from a large pool of applicants who are required to demonstrate their experience and ability by submitting an application packet including a properly labeled sample recording disc along with their resumes.

Complementing the production component of the ESARI is a four-week boot camp

style crash course in audio theory and practical applications. Students interested in learning more about audio, and specifically classical recording, take classes, observe the engineers at work and even do some of their own recordings. Guest lecturers include Neumann microphone guru Juergen Wahl and Grammy winning engineer John Eargle who conduct classroom lectures and hands on demonstrations for the students.

Currently the ESARI is preparing for the 2007 summer season, which promises to be very exciting with some of the best classical musicians in the world expected to perform. Additionally, the program continues to be on the cutting edge of recording technology integrating 5.1 surround recording and high-resolution audio into the recording process.

More and more, the ESARI is becoming a proving ground for the next generation of classical recording engineers and is currently looking for qualified applicants for the 2007 summer season.
